Getting the new OS

Getting the new OS

2002-01-11 by electric_bubble

Thanks for the help john!

I checked wich os i got and it seems like i have 1.01. I read
something about 1.04, is this the newest os available? If so, can i
get it from yamaha? I mean, i bought my an1x secondhand, why would
they like to help me then? If i can, then what should i do? Do you
know a email or a person i can contact or something? How did you do
to obtain 1.04???

I figured out how to use the LFO`s and its pritty simple. Although i
think its a little dissapointing that all the destinations are
hardwired and not able to relink in the modmatrix. That would be good
for creating really experimental sounds. Nevertheless i think it
makes very good leads and basses and pretty good pads to!

Today when i powered up my An1x it behaved strange. First i got some
louds pops and then when i played some tones some where like cut in
half (like a note off instantly when i actually was holding the keys
down). Then a kind of crackling noisy sound began sounding constantly
for like 40 seconds, then i turned the an1x off, and back on and the
crackling was still there but dissapeared after some 10 seconds. Then
everything sounded fine. Have anyone have similiar experiences? It
got me pretty worried now that i have no warranty and all. The only
thing i now is that i had not used it for the whole day and the room
was a bit cold when i powered it up. But still, its very strange!

Sofar i really like the sounds i can create with it but i think the 8
control knobs are horrible. When other synths step 1-2 steps at a
time (of 127) my an1x steps 3-5! Im thinking of open it up and clean
around the iron pins and take the plastic knobs for a bath. Any
advice on cleaning it? Everything else works fine though.

In total im sofar very happy with the an1x!

/Leo

Which OS do I have?

2002-01-12 by Mike B (digiboy)

Sorry But I can't seem to find this in the Archive. Can someone explain
how you check which OS your AN1x is running? And also are any big
differences in the OS from 1.01 to 1.04?

Leo, you'll find answers to most of these questions documented
in the Tips & Tricks section here at Yahoo! Groups:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AN1x-list/files/Tips%20and%20Tr
icks/

Just about everything you've mentioned iin this email s a known
problem that can be corrected by having your AN1x serviced by
Yamaha. I've had some of this work completed myself some
time ago and the problems have never reoccurred (sp?)

You'll need to contact Yamaha Customer Assistance in your
country to arrange for a return authorization number, shipping
instruction, etc. I know that Yamaha offers limited tech support
for 90-days to 2nd owners but I don't believe this applies to
out-of-warranty service. Still, my experience with Yamaha has
been positive and I'm certain your's will be too given the right
approach, i.e., help them want to help you solve these problems.

Re: [AN1x-list] Getting the new OS

2002-01-12 by Phil

Hi Leo,

Regarding 'snap, crackle, pops'...

Yes, a known issue (and possibly corrected with OS1.4???)

The trick I found to avoid it (and I've yet to experience it again in the
past two years), is to not switch the unit off while it is still sounding a
note eg. the long sustain left over from a string patch, or hitting the
arp/seq button to stop the sequencer.

From what I can gather, corruption occurs to the patch during the autosave
whenever the unit is powered down. Note it only seems to occur to the patch
that you were just using, and you can select other patches which appear
fine, but go back to that patch and the crackles return. Then for some
reason it disappears altogether.

We've always put it down to the 'analogue' circuitry warming up before its
first use each day. ;-)

And welcome to the list.

Phil
(...who must also chase up this OS ROM update before it's too late!)

AFAIK you can only display the OS version at power up...

hold the '0', '-', and '+' key down while powering up. OS 1.04 fixes
a few bugs in so far as an audible popping when using the Sync
Delay and and intermittent, and inaccurate, low battery message
experienced by some users. Check the Tips & Tricks section for
a write up on replacing the EPROM chip (and check out Elson's
photos to see what's what in the AN1x):

Thanks! Looks like I have 1.02 and since I haven't experienced any major
problems, I guess I'm OK.

I found the Yamaha Netherlands web site from here:

http://www.yamahasynth.com/link/index.html

and found the following contact info:

"If you want to get in contact to your local dutch subsidiary, please
find here the address:"

Yamaha Music Nederland
Clarissenhof 5b
4133 AB Vianen
Tel.: +31(0)347 358040
Fax: +31(0)347 358060

Have you tried them at this number and spoken to a real person
or have you only had email disappear into the abyss?

Hello,

1st tnx for the tips on ex5s
I know scsi is terrible but the arps (50 users) and the pattern
seq for each key not to mention the nice efxs and original
quality of the samples really make the ex5 appealing to me

about Yamaha NL .. mmm mmm
I called them 2 times for AN1x and EX5 updates
very unfriendly and confused people
basically they told me to ask to a shop dealer
for the upgrades cos they have a special
catalog (expensive price list I guess he meant!)

I know a friendly shop in Noordwik .. I will try there ...
in the past he gave me many free OS updates .. but for Roland gears
lets hope and I will let u know ..

is outrageous that we have to pay for bug fixes !

Yamaha Netherlands is little more than a sales organisation. They also offer
training to dealers.

That's the corporate policy of Yamaha, or perhaps Yamaha Europe. There's not
much you can do about it.

How do you *know* you have to pay for the EPROM when you
haven't even spoken to the dealer yet? You're jumping the gun,
IMO. Let us know how it turns out. Has anybody else spoken with
Yamaha NL?

Here in the US Yamaha provided me the EPROM free of charge
(and out of warranty too.) I expected to pay for shipping and
handling but there was no charge for that either.

Well, acoording to dutch consumer law the show is responsible for upgrades, bugfixes etc...so it does make a little sense that they tell you to get your stuff there....aargh....frustrating since I bought my synth all the way in A'dam..

Any Yamaha dealer will help you. They're not being difficult about that.
It's just that the national organisation won't help you directly, because
they're not equipped for it.

My personal experience with Yamaha Netherlands is very positive. Guess where
I got my copy of the technical reference manual of the EX5 from?
