Sacrilege! :)

Looks like most boards are there for the controllers, and just a little bit
that actually generates the sound, right?

Peter,

Yes, 90% of what goes on in the AN1x (and any other analog modeling synth) happens between the CPU/DSP and the onboard ROM -- all in the digital world. At the end of all the processing, it gets converted back to analog by the DACs, and that's about it, sound-wise. Everything else is UI -- knobs, switches, display, etc.

Yes, I know... I was just disappointed that it looks so pathetically little
that does the sound generating. :)

I've opened my EX5R (before I sold it) one or two times. Huge box, mostly
air with a very big and sparsely populated PCB, and a lot of small PCB's for
the controllers.

Man, what are you doing with that...circuit bending? I see that
there´s plenty of room on the right (left on the picture)
side...hmmm...enough room to drill some holes for a Doepfer Pocket
Control....:)

I took that pic the last time I had to fix my knob pots (they were going
loose and setting their own values). I also took pictures of the process in
case anyone's interested in doing that. But yeah, there's a LOT of room
inside...they could have made the thing truly multitimbral if they wanted to!

Yeah, but then it would have been at a different price point -- even by 2002 standards, more like a Virus KB. When it was released (1997?), it would have probably had a $2995 or $3295 (USD) price tag. I, for one, would have been much less interested. In fact, I WASN'T interested until they dropped the SRP to $1295.

Peter,

Let's face it, the deciding factor in keyboard size is the keybed, itself, plus the need for wheels, knobs, and switches. Miniaturization and digitizing have shrunk the actual electronics to almost pocket-sized. It's like laptops: I can make you one that will fit inside a day-planner, but you won't like the keyboard or the screen!

Now, Peter... what were you expecting to find inside a synth that the
average person can pick up with 2 fingers? As anyone who's seen a Sound
Blaster Live card knows, it's a pretty darn small set of chips which are
necessary to create a lot of sound. Thankfully, the AN1x engineers had the
insanity to include the free envelope generators, which to my knowlege have
little or no equivelant in the competing synth world.

Are we talking about the same synth? :)

This photo displays the proper grip and discipline of the naughty synth:
