At the end of all the processing, it gets converted back to analog by the
DACs, and that's about it, sound-wise.  Everything else is UI -- knobs,
switches, display, etc.

Yes, I know... I was just disappointed that it looks so pathetically little
that does the sound generating. :)

I've opened my EX5R (before I sold it) one or two times. Huge box, mostly
air with a very big and sparsely populated PCB, and a lot of small PCB's for
the controllers.
