Hello

Hello

2001-10-03 by Scott Bradley

Hello list !!!

I've just joined the list and I just bought an AN1X off EBay for 270 English
pounds, which was quite a bargain I thought.

I also have a Waldorf MicroQ, Novation Super Bass Station, Roland Juno 6,
Roland JV1080, Yamaha A4000 and a DJX(Which I'm getting rid of).

Anyway I've had the AN1X for 2 days now and I must say I'm pretty impressed,
not as good as my Waldorf but still a worthwhile addition. I've not really
done much with it yet except play with the presets, some are good and some
bad. I like the scene morphing functions, that seems like a great feature.

I installed the editor on my PC and to be honest I was a little lost, but
that'll take time I guess.
It's not that I don't understand subtractive synthesis, I can edit my MicroQ
fine, just the layout of the editor confused me. I must say the oscillators
sound a little weedy on there own, but still it's a very handy synth and I'm
glad I bought it as my master controller.

Well I just thought I'd introduce myself and I hope some of you can share
some of your thoughts on the keyboard.

Cheers

Scott

Cheers thanks.

Which model of AN?? do most people have on this list ?

And how do they all compare ?

I would still the AN1x, since the AN200 came out just this year and
the AN-PLG is also not so wide spread either.
>

AN1x = 2 x AN200/150PLG-AN

Basically.

Welcome to the list.
Why do you think the AN1x sounds not as good as the uQ? To my ears
their were sonically completely different. The uQ sharper, ok with
those five oscillators, my grandma could do fat basses...;)..but
otherwise i think the AN1x competes nicely with all the other VA´s
out there.
I guess you need to listen to some of the patches off the list. I
recommend to start with the "best of"-bank first.
The JDLX-banks are also quite nice (good job, Jon!).

Hello Scott

Scene morphing is the way to go in my mind.
You don´t need any knowledege about programming synths and you can find
some very cool sound that way.
Throw in some FM and there you go...

(ab)using the effects block of the an1x can help you find new kind of
sounds.

Re: [AN1x-list] Hello

Hi Scott,

Welcome to the list! :-)

"...I've just joined the list and I just bought an AN1X off EBay for 270
English pounds, which was quite a bargain I thought."

Sounds like great price. I'm weighing up whether to sell mine. (Don't worry,
there's nothing wrong with it!) AN1x's are few and far between on the
second-hand market these days. I was thinking mine might fetch AUS$1000
(US$500 / UK£350). Because our (Aussie) dollar is so poor these days, new
prices are continually on the rise and therefore maintaining a healthy
resale value (for those that bought cheap).

"...I must say the oscillators sound a little weedy on their own."

Try boosting the "Feedback" control (in the VCA section). Also, when in
Unison mode (see "Layer"), you can increase the "Detune" amount (see
top-right of the edit menu). Lastly, the "Edge" control (for both VCO1 and
VCO2) can make a dramatic difference to the tone.

"...Well I just thought I'd introduce myself and I hope some of you can
share some of your thoughts on the keyboard."

If intimate discussions about wall-warts (power supplies) are right up your
alley, then you're sure to fit right in. ;-) Seriously though, if you have
any probs, post away.

Phil

Yes a good box !!! I'd advise anyone into programming patches to get one !!

Remember it was an older VA, bought out to compete with the JP8000 which it
probably does very well.

Don't get me wrong I'm glad I got it and it makes a great controller.

I've downloaded some patches and yes I am impressed, I even had a go a
designing my own last night but ....

Am I wrong in saying that the AN1X cannot do Sine or Triangle Oscillators ?
Sure there must be a way.

What I found was that the Scenes, Free EG, FX and Arp are great features,
they are what make the synth for me, without them the synth sounds pretty
weak, but hey it's just a different angle on sound creation and with them
you can have some great fun. The MicroQ is kinda opposite to this, it's FX
are poor, it's arp isn't great and it doesn't have Scenes or FreeEG but it
is outstanding at Phat patches with no need for FX or Scenes. I'd say the
AN1X's strengths lie in it's ability to make great phrases and sequences (if
you catch my drift).

Anyway I've had great fun messing around with it the past few nights.

Cheers

Oscillators (was-->Re: [AN1x-list] Re: Hello)

Hi there again Scott,

"...Am I wrong in saying that the AN1X cannot do Sine or Triangle
Oscillators? Sure there must be a way."

- No dedicated Triangle but you may be able to extract a similar sound from
one of the mix/inner/pulse settings.

- For Sine, the "Edge" control (for both VCO1 and VCO2) that I mentioned
earlier warps the waveform into a sine wave.

Hope that helps,

Phil

What exactly are the mix/inner settings ?
I've not read my manual through yet peoperly, but a quick run down would be
helpfull

Sounds intertesting, what is the edge control exactly ?

The Edge control can also give triangle-like sounds, when used with a 50%
pulse wave. From a technical point of view, a triangle and a square wave
are similar, but the triangle has less high frequency content:

Square = f1 + 1/3 * f3 + 1/5 * f5 + 1/7 * f7 + ...

Triangle = f1 + 1/9 * f3 + 1/25 * f5 + 1/49 * f7 + ...

Turning the Edge to 0 makes a sine wave; turning it to 20-50 makes a
triangle-like wave.

Re: Hello

2001-10-04 by Bruce Wahler

Scott,

The AN1x is a multi-layered beast, and while it's not fascinating reading,
it does help to at least skim the manual from cover to cover. There's a
lot of possibility waiting inside the synth, and some of it isn't obvious
at first glance. When I first got my AN1x, I thought of it as a simple
digital Minimoog clone -- I've been playing synths since the early 70's,
and cut my teeth on the Minimoog and the Putney VCS3 -- but there are lots
of more possibilities than that. IMHO, here are some of the nuggets that
lie in wait, once you decide to get in there and learn all the possibilities:

Edge Control -- morphs the wave shape from a sine wave to the chosen wave,
controlling the harmonic content of the result; takes a 50% pulse wave from
a sine to a triangle to a "soft" square wave to a "classic" analog square
wave, to a DCO (rather than VCO) edge.

Free EG -- allows the recording of up to four real-time adjustments, to add
timbre changes, fading, etc. without the need for an extra set of
hands. This feature is useful to make changes that sync to the beat of a
song, and for modulating the oscillator sync into almost "talk box" effects.

Arpeggiator -- while this has always been an interesting feature to have
lying around, most of the synths I've used had about eight patterns. The
AN1x includes quite a few more, including some techno and bass line
variations that may come in handy.

Step Sequencer -- at first, this seems like a limited feature -- only
16-steps (32 would have been better) -- but once you realize that in
addition to the one sequence per patch, there are another 128 sequences
which can be linked to any patch and chosen from the keyboard, the
possibilities open up a bit. Also, the sequence (and arpeggiator) can be
sent to other synths via MIDI; I use this to add percussion elements from
my Alesis S4 to songs.

Modulation -- each patch allows for up to 16 sources of modulation (per
scene), chosen from a pretty large list of sources, to alter another large
list of destinations. In effect, the AN1x is something of a modular synth,
without the hassle of patch cords!

There are other features I could discuss, but my point is not to write the
AN1x as a one-dimensional instrument until you try all of its possibilities.

Regards,

-BW

RE: [AN1x-list] Re: Hello

I did start to flick through and yes I will read it, just needed to play
with it first.

I'm not writing it off I just paid 270 quid for it, I want to get as much
out of it as I can don't worry.

But thanks for the pointers !!! I'm gonna take a look at the edge control
tonight.

I respect what you say, you seem to have a lot of history ... synth wise.

Cheers

On my own, I mostly make strange synth music. I also make some less strange
synth music and some remixes, together with my friend David Lilja.

Given the development time of such a product - and it was a whole new area
for both Roland and Yamaha - I doubt that the prime criterion of the AN1x
was to compete with the JP8000. Although it could be that the Japanese have
some industrial espionage going on, or leaks within their design department.

If anything, both look like a reaction to the Nord Lead.
