we are trying out a used unit and volume is very low on e. piano setting
(#87). is this a faulty machine or can it be rectified ?

Try a factory reset, by holding 7-8-9 while powering on. (Or it's another
row of buttons on the numeric keypad, you should be able to figure this one
out.) If the problem still persists, be very wary.

If everything looks OK, leave it turned on for a couple of hours and try
again. The latter advice may seem odd, but my AN1x has (or had?) the
tendency to act funny after being left on for a long time. But I don't think
that there's something wrong with my AN1x: it's just one of those things.

Under the VCA parameter group, go to Assign Knob 6 'Volume'
and check the setting. Also, be aware that the Velocity Sensing
for the patch is set at a modestly high value of +36 meaning the
timbre will be noticeably affected by how hard or soft the voice is
played.

Hm, strange i noticed that too with my AN1x. Sometimes i think it´s
because it is hooked up to my RS7000, and whatever i do on the RS it
get´s send out by MIDI, and sooner or later the AN1x is messed up by
all that data. Before i had the RS, i had the AN1x hooked up to my
Electribe ER1. But strange left alone and only in usage without MIDI,
no problems...

At one point, my AN1x was so messed up that I had to factory-reset it. I
don't know why: perhaps it was funny MIDI signals, or just old age, but I
did lose a couple of nice patches with it. :(

Hm, strange, i usually just switch it off and turn it back on and
everything works then.

Well...it´s always good to have a backup of your sounds as .AN1 file

It was really seriously messed up. It was long past the "maybe powering it
off and on again would help" stage. I never found out what the problem was.

My AN1x also has (or had? don't have the time for it lately) the tendency to
'lose' the right channel into crackles after it's been turned on for quite a
while. Powering off and on a few times seemed to help.

I know, but I'm too lazy for that, even with the stuff I program at work.

Sounds like the DSP inside the An1x is a bit faulty.

Or whatever creates the noise.

I think it is (or was) a software problem, but it's so hard to put a finger
on it. I'm running version 1.02 of the ROM.

I must say that I'm impressed with the analogue emulation of the AN1x, which
includes funny behaviour in regards to temperature, time of being switched
on, etc. :)

One thing though: before, my AN1x was constantly plugged into the mains.
I've heard a rumour, or read somewhere, that the battery won't drain if you
leave it plugged in like that.

I mean, even if you don't switch the AN1x on with the power switch. I think
I read somewhere that the battery won't drain if you keep it plugged in,
even if you don't switch the unit on. But I don't know if this is true.

Peter,

While this is possible, the fact that the AN1x has a "hard" (on-off) power
switch, as opposed to the "soft" switches used on PCs and TVs, makes me
think that it's a true on-off switch, and that no power is available in the
off state. Also, the manual states that if the unit starts acting strange,
or smells/smoke appear, then the user should turn off the power switch
immediately; this implies that the power switch completely isolates the
synth form the power supply.

Perhaps the statement you are thinking of refers to the fact that the
battery doesn't drain when the unit is on?

That could be. I'm not exactly new to the world of electricity and
electronics, but I never opened my AN1x - or have studied the manual that
well. :)

Actually, the manual says very little about the battery, except that you
should have it changed -- by a tech -- when it gets old. I assume that
means when you lose your favorite patches just before a gig or recording
session??? ;^)

NO!!!
This will never happen to anyone in this group because we're all smart
enough that WE'VE BACKED UP ALL OUR PATCHES USING THE _FREE_ PROGRAM - AN1x
EDIT!!!

Well, most of the patches I lost when my AN1x went loco are stored on a
computer.

Trouble is, that computer doesn't want to boot anymore.
