I never play my AN1X in stereo, just plug it into an old Fender
Bassman head and a 15 inch speaker. It sounds great. I don't record
in stereo either.I constantly forget what a wonderful era this is for
keyboards. Synths with capabilities undreamed of only ten years ago
are going for a small fraction of the cost of a Farfisa back in the
60s.

It's easy to be nervous and suspicious of people, but most people are
wonderful loving souls.

Thanks to everyone that listened to Ring on mp3. Much appreciated.

Like someone already mentioned, the reason why synths are stereo is mostly
effects. Only a few use stereo samples (the Roland XV5080 comes to mind, as
do samplers), or can put different oscillators at different pan positions (I
just found out my EX5 can do that).

I think the AN1x has a mono synth engine with a pan control and an effects
section. With the 'Separation' control, you can effectively turn it into two
monosynths. The difference with those old analogue synths is the effect
section (and twenty-five years in technological advance, of course).

There are people far more knowledgeable on the subject of the AN1x on this
list than I am, but that's what I understand of it.

All,

As a long-time user of stereo keyboard amplification (since the mid 80's),
let me add my $0.02 ...

While it's true that early synths were mono, it's also true that most
musicians noticed an improvement in sound when stereo sources were
available. Using stereo keyboards is extra work, but I for one feel the
benefits are worth the effort.

In the AN1x's case, there are two areas where one can use stereo to enhance
the sonic experience.
    * Use the separation and pan controls to send portions of the sound
left and right. This works best when used sparingly, as it has a
"gimmicky" aspect when overused. (The same could be said of other effect
like wah-wah, vocoder, and echo.) Also, remember that the audience will
likely not hear hard-left and hard-right panning well, so limit the size of
the stereo field.
    * Subtle effects changes can often lead to dramatic results. I often
take a delay source and spread the times of the left and right sides to
better simulate the sound heard in natural echo. As an example, if a sound
has 300 mSec. delay, send 301.2 mSec. to the left, and 298.9 mSec. to the
right. The sound will sound richer and "wider."

Regards,

-BW

stereo

Hey, the AN1X is stereo! I listened to the synth through my headphones.
Love the tacky panning effects. I'm going to use it on everything.

Hi Jimmy !
you have somewhere in a menu the "auto panning" that could be alternate
(as on a church organ where the A pipe is left and the A# right) or
random , sync'ed or not with the arpeggiator . It could be very
impressive ....
Cheers !

Oh, so now you're gonna map panning to velocity, or random, or maybe via
a square wave have an LFO that shifts the pitch or filter of the sound
as it moves left to right? You wouldn't be THAT tacky, would you?

(These ideas are not recommended for use in or with a band or group
setting. The author is not responsible for damage to the synth or
player resulting from these tacky sounds.)
