fwd: OT : samplers

2001-04-18 by dbase789@aol.com

hello..
I consider getting a kurzweil k2000 in the next few days. (alredy
monday;) Does anybody has an experience of this unit (rackmount one) ?
This has 8megs, v3.?x, a 100megs zip and sample opt
Also, does anyone has experience with VAST, and how it compares with
substractive synthesis? seems pretty powerfull, and I saw on kurzweil
web-site they reproduced many old analog synths ..
 Thanks in advance.

I love the Kurzweil samplers. They sound nice and punchy, they are built like tanks, VAST is great (like having incredible DSP on every patch), Kurzweil has continued to support them and provide OS upgrades, and there is a HUGE repository of patches and samples available online. The usual gripes are: low note polyphony (24 on the K2000, 48 on the K2500), lame factory presets, lame ROM samples, and a geekish user interface. VAST makes up for the ROM set--if you know what you're doing you can get what you need out of it. The filters are OK, but nothing like any of the good VA synths out there...

FWIW,

Timothy

Timothy's advice is well stated and correct.

   I use a K2000VP rack- I found that I used it so much that I bought a
second one last year (instead of buying a K2500r).
I use them mainly for synth sounds (using VAST) but sometimes I play a few
samples on them (sample transfer via SCSI is a breeze).
Programming is fairly logical- they have a Nice LCD display that shows
plenty of info.

I have to add one gripe - The effects in the K2000 are really crummy
sounding (I think they were based on an old Digitech engine).
The K2000VP is a good deal for under $1000.

-thanks for the pointers..I was wondering the effects to be one each
of the sounds or gobal as in (say) the MC505. but as timothy says,
there are many option to get out of the Eproms in this case and noway
I can know at the moment if it is v3.01 or v3.18 or one of the
others..don't know if Kurzweil still supports them, but I hope so.
look forward to get it actually..

The Kurzweil K2000 with os 3.xx is the one of best sampler I ever used.
And the V.A.S.T is still powerful, its more than just a substractive
synthesizer its a matrix synthesizer, and it adds a very unique sound to
your samples.

The draw bars on k2000 as I see it:

- Only 24 voice polyphonic
- Internal effect processor is not good.
- the mixed output i noisy
- V.A.S.T algorithms are sometimes to small (for example it is not
possible to ring modulate a sync saw with a sample and the put i true a
Low pass filter with variable resonance)
- The filters can't self oscillate.
- Sync slave OSC can only be a SAW OSC.
- Samples are not on the matrix modulation list.

But hey, nothings perfect.

Sorry for continuing this off-topic thread, but...

Wasn't that increased to 48 in the K2500/K2600?

And those 48 voices are 48 voices, always. I think you can have four
elements per voice, so in terms of other synthesisers (like my EX5, which is
supposedly 126 voice polyphonic, as long as you have one element per voice)
it would be 192 voice polyphonic.

> - Internal effect processor is not good.

Has that been fixed by now?

> - the mixed output i noisy

Still?

That's a bummer.

That too, although I can live without it.

> - Sync slave OSC can only be a SAW OSC.

Better than any sample player, though.

> - Samples are not on the matrix modulation list.

Er, I don't get that.

> But hey, nothings perfect.

And there's the worry about decreasing quality... their European distributor
going tits-up... but a friend of mine bought a K2600X with a sample board,
and he's *very* happy with it. Amazingly complex piece of hardware.

That's correct, it has 192 oscilators.

In fact, a friend of mine uses a K2000VP, and we have never had it run out
of voices in any "audible" way. It seems, apart from having 24 voices
regardless of the number of "elements" in each voice, Kurzweil has a very
good algorithm for which voice to remove when polyphony is exceeded. (Of
course, if you really try to get it to run out audibly, you can, but when
used for music, together with other synths and stuff, we have never _heard_
"voice-clipping" from it)

As for noise on the mix out, the K2000VP is silent (when it's supposed to
be)...
