Try getting the newest version and see if that works any better.
What soundcard do you use? And what computer? you never know... something could
be wrong there too, doesn't have to be your an1x.

Can you both provide more background info on your respective set-up's,
i.e., Windows or Mac, what MIDI Interface are you using and which
version of AN1x?

Also, I have a few article regarding MIDI Interfaces and AN1xEdit on my
page - one of which deals with this subject on the Mac and the other two
are from Windows users. I'd be happy to post another article with more
details regarding this common proble if any Windows users would like to
help :-)

Jon,
Thanks for the response! I really don't know what's up with the editor...
I'm running a PC (P2, 233mHz, 96M RAM) and the editor works perfectly fine
if I use patches stored on my computer. I just can't upload from the synth
to the computer. I'm using a basic joystick port --> midi in and midi out
split cable.

I've tried using the editor with a laptop that had USB --> midi box and that
didn't work either. My friend gave me the program and it works fine with
his AN1X...he uses the same laptop to edit.

I made sure the transmit and receive channels on the synth were set to "1"
and that the device no. was set to "all".

The "Receive Error" message only appears on the computer.

As far as the version of the AN1x, I don't know...how can I figure that out?
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to try and help me!

Being a Mac user I've no hands on time with the type of joystick port
MIDI interface you speak of. I do know that they are fairly common.
It's not a MIDI Port on a budget sound card is it? I've heard those are
not very reliable. C'mon PC users - speak up here! How about some
guidance please?!

USB - MIDI is haphazard at best. They ONLY user I know of using a USB
MIDI Interface w/ AN1xEdit successfully is Joop and his Emagic AMT8 on
his Mac. SysEx & USB are particularly ill matched. I've had some
feedback from Joop and Gary which will appear in an article on USB +
SysEx within the next few weeks (if I get off my butt and finish it!)

The correct thing to do.

Typical error message. Nothing new there.

Check under the help menu for an About option. Otherwise, select the
Icon for AN1xEdit, right click and select properties. On the Mac you
simply go to the Apple menu or use the Get Info key command. The
current version is v1.1 and is known to be stable (truth be told, all
versions I've used have been stable!)

If you're serious about making MIDI music on your computer, skip the joystick
port and use a real MIDI interface (check out interfaces by Midiman, Mark of the
Unicorn or a used Opcode). Joystick port interfaces are based on an outdated
MIDI port standard (MPU-401) which handles basic forms of MIDI data but not all;
things like SysEx messages (which the AN1x editor relies heavily on) or MIDI
clock or NRPN messages are usually ignored by these Playskool-type MIDI jacks.

Remember...Joystick interfaces are for JOYSTICKS!

If I may add: if you have a PC, skip Mark of the Unicorn as well. They do
have Windows drivers, but they don't care at all.

Oh well, I'm using mine SB16 with my EX5 and AN1x. It hasn't given me any
problems, not even with SysEx.

I should haste to add that playing audio at the same time as transmitting
MIDI is *not* a good idea: you'll lose bytes while getting others you didn't
want.

I'm using a similar setup as the original poster (PC with a SB16).
I've got the An1x connected to a Gravis MIDI interface plugged into the
joystick port of the SB16.. You mentioned you had the "split wire" MIDI
adaptor.. I started off with one of those but NEVER could get it to work
correctly.. I upgraded to the gravis interface (it cost about $30) and
haven't looked back.. The gravis plugs into the joystick port and has a
small box with extra joystick ports and the midi in and out.. It also has
send/receive led's which helps a lot with troubleshooting. I'm not even
sure you can still buy it (I don't see it on their web site), but my main
point is that you might want to upgrade the interface from the cheap split
cable to something a little better.

I am using a similar setup, PC with SB AWE 64 Value and MIDI-Split-
Cable connected to the Joystick/MIDI-Port without any problems.
If he can´t request any sounds from the synth despite he set all
parameters on the synth and on AN1xedit right, there are several
hardware-error sources:

- the MIDI-cable is broken
- the soundcard-MIDI-port is broken
- the AN1x-MIDI-port is broken

So, exchangeing the cable might be the cheapest solution, if it still
doesn´t work, exchange the soundcard, if it still doesnt work, i
would recommend to check at his friends place if his AN1x MIDI-port
might be broken (which i actually doubt, this is my fifth Yamaha
product and i never had any problems with the MIDI-ports, despite all
rumours, their products are built like rocks, even when they look
plastic-ish).

I have a similar problem I have a AWE64 and I can't get the editor working
with it at all! I've tried everything except re-installing Win 98 Which
could be the problem as it crashes after Messing Around with MIDI Settings.
I've got an older Turtle Beach Montego. Do these have a better MIDI
Interface? Any Ideas.

My AN1x will drive my Sound Cards sounds OK but won't recieve data form the
PC

Hm, strange. I don´t have problems at all. Seems like that the MIDI-
out on your SB doesn´t work, or as i already said, check the cables.

Dunno, never used this card before. Try it.

So the MIDI-In on your soundcard works, but it seems not the MIDI-
out. Have you tried to play a simple MIDI-file on your AN1x with a
sequencer?
