Hello Jim,
Are you still using OMS or have you switched to FreeMIDI?

In my experience with OMS and a standard MIDI Interface, i.e., Mac
serial port, you sometimes need to 'wake up' the connection between
AN1xEdit and the OMS Instrument definitions. This is done from the
Setup > MIDI Port Setup... Toggle through a few OMS Instrument defs
from the MIDI Out drop down menu in the MIDI Port Setup dialog. This *
always* works for me with my standard MIDI Interface (Opcode Tranlator
Pro.)

My experience with USB MIDI Interfaces on the Mac and AN1xEdit is not
good. I use an ADS Tech USB adapter card (PCI) in a desktop Power Mac.
I've tried both a MIDIMAN MIDIsport 2x2 and an Opcode MIDIport 32 using
every available USB driver from Apple - including the new v1.4.6
bundled with OS 9.1 - and I've never been able to make AN1xEdit receive
SysEx via USB. Transmitting from AN1xEdit via USB works fine - just
receiving data is a bear :-# I've been able to dump and resend single
patches successfully to Logic and Vision - Cubase was kind of wishy-
washy. Large bulk dumps didn't go to well for me - aside from the
'Generic Bulk' facility in Galaxy. That seemed to be okaaaaay. Don't
know how reliable it would be - Gary seemed to think there were some
lost bits in my file but I didn't notice any serious corruption when
the Voices were reloaded.

There's a fellow on the list who has been successful with an Emagic
AMT8 + USB with AN1xEdit. I haven't had an opportunity to try an AMT8
myslef - or any of the MOTUs. I once tried to use FreeMIDI in OMS
Emulate mode - it was a disaster and I've never tried again ;-)

HTH

Let me know how it goes for you - this is a topic I've been following
for awhile!

I'm using both - FreeMIDI with DP and OMS with other apps like sounddiver,
protools, etc.

I think I tried that, but the midi ports are completely grayed out, because
I'm not using them, I'm using USB. I may have to go back to a serial
connection. *Sigh*.

Yes, I'm able to bulk dump patches to the AN1X, but I do get a
"SysexSizeerror" message on the AN1X when I do that, though the transfer
seems to work. But I can't receive any data into AN1Xedit.

I just sold an Opcode Studio 4 and a Studio 128 to get a Motu MTP, so Im not
in a position to buy yet anothr interface. Anyway, I mostly use DP, so the
interface is good for that.

Will Do. Does the author of AN1XEdit still do any work on the program?
Version 1.1 is very old.

Don't worry software doesn't tend to rust or degrade over time :-)

the App and source code actually belong to Yamaha...I produced it under
contract. So really I am not at liberty to keep updating it.
Furthermore....why would I want to ...it does what it needs to do. If Yamaha
asked for a version to handle the additional features of the new AN200, I
might consider updating the program for that....but its really Yamahas
decision.

What do you mean they are grayed out? I assumed you made an OMS Setup
doc with the MOTU USB Interface defined?

When you perform the transfer from your sequencer to the AN1x try to
slow down the tempo - I mean reaaaallly sloooow - and that might clear
up the SysExSizeerror (I hate when that happens.)

Makes sense to me. I miss my Studio 4 - I should NEVER have sold it!
I'm going to buy an Emagic MIDI Interface someday.

Did you catch Gary's reply? To be honest, I have a hard time imagining
what else he could cram into AN1xEdit - it works and does EVERYTHING. I
know there's a SoundDiver module for the AN1x but I only tried it once
- and briefly at that. Don't think there is a Unisyn module but I could
be mistaken.

Thanks for your reply, and to the incredible effort that you must have out
into that program. I guess I should have asked a simple question to start
with - is AN1XEdit 1.1 (Mac) compatible with USB-only interfaces? If it is,
then I'll keep on trying to get it to work.

An1xEdit simply uses OMS to talk to your MIDI interface. Hence its not
really a question of whether An1xEdit is compatible with your USB interface
as whether OMS is!

In practice the real question is whether your USB interface is capable of
managing MIDI sysex timing correctly. i.e.
a) It maintains correct inter block gaps
b) There is no data loss at full MIDI bandwidth with large sysex packets.

An1x uses very large sysex packets at full bandwidth for bulk dumps....and
both the AN1x and An1xEdit are sensitive to corruption of the data packets.

Personally I would avoid USB MIDI interfaces. The underlying protocol is a
'fire and forget' mechanism that does not guarantee end to end delivery or
handshaking. I continue to recommend serial port devices....until mLan
becomes popular.
