plg150an editor unit values to HZ conversion?

plg150an editor unit values to HZ conversion?

2001-01-25 by elektro_dan@yahoo.com

Hi my name is danny and i have a few questions about gary g's plg150an
editor.

1.the speed for lfo 1 and lfo 2 is measured in units from 1-256. what
are these units in ms or Hz?

2.the peg attack and decay times are displayed in units from 0-127.
what are these units in ms or Hz?

3.the lfo 1 delay and portamento time is displayed in units from
0-127. what are these units in ms or Hz?

4.the FEG's and the AEG's A,D,S,R times are in units from 0-127. what
are these units in ms or Hz?

5.the free EG is in steps from 1-191. if the EG LEGENTH IS AT 1 BAR
WHAT ARE THESE UNITS IN MS OR Hz?

I've been calling all kind of people and nobody can give me any
answers. if you got answers post them on this site and please e-mail
me. those answers will help everyone design perfect filter sweeps and
lfo pads matched to a certain tempo. this info is very important to
everyone!

THANK YOU.

Half of this info is in the black-and-white thin databook coming ith An-1x
, I suppose ...

Neither, they are 192ths of a bar and a bar length depends on the tempo
you have set.

Hi Danny

Pretty hard questions. I haven't made the calculations yet, and it will
take me some time just to explain it to you. I don't spend that much
time unless you have a dam good reason. Answer to this question: why do
you need to know those values? please let me know, and I'll get back to
you.

Check page 8 of the AN1x Data List pamphlet - you'll find Parameter
Tables that translate the Data value to the equicalnet value in Hz for
the LFO Frequency, EQ, Reverbs, etc.

If you don't have a copy of the Data List, check the Files section here
at eGroups. I'm pretty certain a PDF version is there for download...

Interesting question - I see no mention in the Owners Manual, or Data
List, of a table to tranlate ADSR, Portamento times, etc., values.

Almost every parameter value in the AN1x is a data value not measured
in ms or Hz. Keep in mind that MIDI allows for 128 potential values for
any MIDI CC source/dest, whether that's reflected as 0-127 or 1-128 is
up to the individual manufacturers...

I made a post some months ago with suggestions to calculate the LFO
times to make it easier to 'sync' them to your MIDI tracks - search the
archives and it will turn up. Maybe I posted it on my website too -
don't recall - check http://www.jdlx-musique.com/support/an1xpage.htm

If all else fails, do it the old fashioned way - use you ears ;-)

Thanks Jon, because once again you have come up with the correct answer.
My question to Reggie would be: What synth do you know of that lists ADSR
values in actual Hz? I've never personally seen one that does.

Actually the LFO values on p8 of the data list only apply to the effect
units of the AN1x (and since these are not present on the PLG150AN...then
they are not relevant). Even if the table on p8 did relate to the LFO
modules of the AN sound generator, they would be incomplete (i.e. the table
only shows values up to 159, whereas the LFO modules range from 1 - 256).

Unfortunately the values the original poster (elektro) is asking for are not
defined in the user manual/data list. Neither could I get a list of what the
values represent from Yamaha when I was writing An1xEdit (otherwise I would
have included the units in the user interface...as I did with parameters
where the units are defined!). Hence I directed elektro to this list, on the
chance that somebody has actually measured these values and has a definitive
answer!

[On a personal note, I have never found that I actually need to know the
units of these parameters....you just twiddle them until you get sound you
want!]

Believe it or not the E-mu ESI series list the Filter Frequencies and
LFO's in Hz! About a year ago i was playing around with one at GC at I
was really surprised to see that. I bet the XL1 & Mo' Phatt et al. do
too (besides, they have a much improved synth hierarchy than the ESI
samplers...)

Are you certain? On my AN1x every effect parameter is clearly marked in
Hz, kHz, db, ms or s. What point oies the LFO Frequency table serve
then?

I have a Proteus 2000 here and , yes , LFO paramterers are in Hz !
But Filter freq. goes from 0 to 255 so it's not freq in Hz ...
Envelopes are also in 0 - 127 range , not sec's ...
But Glide (Portamento) is in sec/oct ...
So it's kinda half this , half that ...

The table on p8 is there to allow you to construct sysex messages for effect
parameters i.e. so that you know which data byte value to send for a
specific LFO value. (its not there so that you can understand the values
from the front panel....since the synth has the lookup table built in, it
kindly displays the effect values in the correct units on the front panel).
AN1xEdit does exactly the same thing.

However the actual LFO module of the AN voice generator i.e. LFO 1 & 2 (not
the effects) simply displays LFO SPEED values in the range 1 - 256. Yamaha
have not provided a lookup table to translate these values into Hz. Again
An1xEdit behaves the same way (since I was unable to obtain from Yamaha what
the corresponding frequency values are!).
