Why? PC are so much cheaper. Just get a P4 processor. That's faster than any MAC.

Before considering a P4 you may want to check out : http://www.emulators.com/pentium4.htm ----- Original Message -----

Works great,no single problem ;-) over 11 Synth's with Emagic SoundDiver 3.x. IMHO,the best you can have.Only one problem,may be $$. Welcome,grtz, -Joop-

Nivek Krap shared with us: > Why? PC are so much cheaper. > Just get a P4 processor. > That's faster than any MAC. What a totally uninformed and silly thing to say. The P4 is the definite proof that clock frequency has little to do with actual performance. An AMD Athlon at 1.2 Ghz beats a 1.5 Ghz P4 at most benchmarks, including those who are important for digital audio. The PowerPC processors may run at a lower clock frequency, but they have a much better performance/clock ratio than Intels or AMDs. And they have the AltiVec engine, which is *very* useful for digital audio. Moreover, Pentium 4's are bloody expensive. "PC's are so much cheaper" is not exactly the case with the P4. So, in total, Macs may be somewhat slower in raw computing performance, but that's not the reason you'd buy one anyway. It's about the ease of use, the absence of driver nightmares, and the general hardware/software mess you get with a PC (let alone Windows, which adds another layer of confusion). - Peter

The reason I'm considiring a Mac, mostly because is just better for audio work than a PC. Also ease of use. ----- Original Message -----

I'm thinking of getting the G4 multiprocessor 450MHz or the 500MHZ version. How is processor use with the soft synths and do seem to run out of voices?? Or effects limited cause of processor demands?? Welcome to the list, I'm using a desktop Power Mac G3 upgraded (and overclocked ;-) with a 450 MHz G3 ZIF chip, 192 MB RAM, a TurboMax ATA/33 PCI card w/ Maxtor Diamond Max 20 GB HD, an Echo Gina Sound Card along with a pair of SCSI peripherals on a chain with my Ensoniq sampler. MIDI Software & Hardware of choice had been Opcode Vision DSP & Opcode MIDI Interfaces - along with Bias Peak SE for sample editing and an assortment of softsynths. Switched to Emagic Logic Audio this past year - can't cost justify a new MIDI Interface right now but if one becomes necessary then it will be Emagic. I know a couple of PC fellows from this list and other lists who had taken the G4 plunge this past year. One went with an entirely MOTU set-up - Digi Performer, Unisyn, a 2408 audio interface, and a Fastlane MIDI Interface. The other went the Emagic route - Logic Audio, SoundDiver, AMT8, etc. I'd suggest you think through what you might want to run on a new Mac and sit in on those mailing lists which are relevant for a few weeks. There are Emagic and Steingberg lists here at eGroups with VERY large archives that you can search through - this is not an uncommon topic. I'm pretty impressed with how much PowerMac $1500 will buy these days but it's still a lot of money. Know what you can afford before you jump in head first. If you're running an app today that you think you might want to stick with - check out the crossgrade costs. Same applies for switching from one vendor to another. I know that MOTU, Steinberg, and Emagic offer price incentives to switch from the competitions products to their own. That's how I switched from Opcode to Emagic products. In a nutshell: decide what you want to run first and THEN decide on the hardware in a configuration sufficient to accomodate your needs, i.e., RAM, hard drive capacity, back-up media, etc. One last, thing: MW Expo is about to take place week after next. Prices *just* dropped on the current models so expect further discounts on Mac's when the new 2001 models are announced. Check out http:// www.xlr8yourmac.com/ for some GREAT technical info and http:// www.maccentral.com/ for news & gossip. HTH ragrds, Jon p.s. - Joop, RMA prices have taken the plunge here in the U.S. - 128 MB PC100 SDRAM for $62.50 each! It might be time for me to upgrade! p.p.s. - Peter, enjoyed your reply to this thread. CPU speed is not the sole benchmark to measure performance. --- In AN1x-list@egroups.com, "synth17" <michell@m...> wrote:

Hello, Thank You for your advice, I will think of what I want before switching. So far I'm thinking of going with MOTU and Stienberg stuff. I'm going to look for those mailing lists, again Thank You. ----- Original Message -----

just to briefly comment on that... i use primarily a PC for my studui production it is a P3 600. first of, the cpu is not the only component for success there is ram, motherboard, and hard disk. i am working with macs also for production (G4's and G3's) to tell the honest truth yeah the macs are easy to use, however i never saw a G4 doing 72 stereo tracks of audio at real time without external DSP. my P3 does. windows can be a REAL pain, BUT when optimized properly, and with the right HD's and hardware it kicks ass! another comment. NOT TRUE!!! mac is better than a pc when Pro tools is involved... well if you want to get swallowed up by digidesign mouth go right at it. again i'm doing 72 stereo tracks of audio with dx and vst plugins without External DSP hardware. no bulshit. i use mac on a dalily basis also with programs like MAX and other sound processing languages and it has its advantages but it is not better at digital audio than a pc. the software i use for digital audio is SAW Studio from Innovative Quality Software. afer many attempts with many softwares this is my way to go. you can check it out at www.iqsoft.com they have the BEST tech support on the planet. plug ins I use are waves, Anwida soft, Ultrafunk, Sonic Timeworks, Sonic foundry and others... the waves plugins are the most cpu hogs but they do sound good. plus Innovative Quality Software has native plugins for SAW Studio, or SAW Pro (lower version) check it out and let me know if you have more questions. Hi Eitan, Your results sound fantastic! What program are you achieving 72 stereo audio tracks on? Also, what sort of plug-in count/type are you achieving? Cheers, Phil (Now getting way off-topic - Which is better for video: VHS or Beta?) ;-)
