FM versus Cross Modulation

FM versus Cross Modulation

2000-10-23 by Jerry A

Fellas:

What is the difference between FM as it is implementated on the AN1x,
and Cross Mod as it is implemented on the PLG150AN? I always thought
of FM as a substitute/surrogate name for cross mod, but perhaps I am
off.

Anybody care to enlighten...? Anybody got both and An1x & a PLG150AN.

Cheers,

Jerry

simple FM works when there is a relashionship between a carrier sound wave
and a modulation sound wave. what you hear is the carrier sound wave that is
being controlled, or modulated by the modulation sound wave. the idea is
that amplitude changes in the modulation sound wave alter the frequency of
the carrier wave thus when changing the value of amplitude in the modulation
wave you get frequesncy representation of that change in the carrier wave. on
the AN1x it is achieved by splicing vco 1 into 2 oscilators..master and slave.

i hope i'm making sence...

Re: FM versus Cross Modulation

I was not clear in my first question, about FM versus Cross-mod. Here
is my understanding of the AN1x/PLG150An situation:

An1x has FM, Ring Modulator and Oscillator Sync

PLG150AN has FM, Ring Modulator, Oscillato Syn AND Cross Modulation
(VCO2 modulates VCO 1)

So, what is this addition? My assumption is that they added this
feature in the process of making the synth more prophet 5 like.
(though they have not added a feature to modulate filter with osc 1
which a P5 could do.)I follow theoretically what the ring modulator
and the FM do, but I would think that together they would render a
separate osc cross modulation function irrelevant. Don't you think?

Hence my question.

Cheers,

Jerry

Cross modulation (or a.k.a. X-modulation or a.k.a. Ring modulation) is also
on the AN1x.
Cross modulation takes two signals and outputs the sum and difference of the
two in freuencies, this is what i think it does at least...
Frequency modulation modulates the frequency ... but don't ask me how it
modulates it, i only know how it looks on a grapic. i can guess though...
maybe it modulates the frequency by multiplying it with another frequency,
and the higher the other frequency is the higher it is being modulated.
