Unable to use device with usb to midi

Unable to use device with usb to midi

2013-07-19 by T

Hey, all.

I recently picked up a very cheap usb-to-midi cable online to use an1x editor. Now, the device will not communicate with the system. In the editor, i am able to select in and out ports, listed as USB2.0-MIDI, but when trying to send or request data, I just get a message box with "Receive Error!"

I have tried installing the official Yamaha USB-MIDI drivers for my 64-bit version of Windows Vista, but even when following the setup walkthrough, I get an error 25001, telling me no device is connected.

Is the inexpensive cable unlikely to work or has anyone had success with one of these?

Thank you for any help.

I'm no MIDI expert by any stretch but just an off-beat idea here...

Seeing that the An1x was made during the time when Windows 2000 and XP were the current MS operating systems, perhaps you need an XP computer for the MIDI interface to work?

I've read on other posts that discontinued synths work with operating systems of that era. I've also read that VISTA doesn't work all that good with other outside devices (but have no personal experience here).

Again, just an idea to consider.

Best of luck...Let us know how things turn out.

It's extremely unlikely to work. Spend a little more money on a decent
MIDI interface, and you'll be able to send bulk dumps.

The explanation is that MIDI interfaces have a hardware buffer in which
they store data before sending it at 31.5 kbps to the synth. The
computer can push data much quicker, and actually cannot push data at
that exact speed.

The buffer doesn't have to be big, but with cheap MIDI cables the buffer
is so small that it cannot accommodate the large amount of data you get
in a bulk dump. This is why these cables are useless for sound editing
and librarian duties.

I am still using a USB to MIDI cable to save a load dumps from various synths (but didn't try with the AN1x yet) and that works well for me.

One thing I found confusing on the midi connector end at is you need to connect the cable OUT into the synth IN and the cable IN into the synth OUT, not IN into IN and OUT into OUT. I know this is logical but I first made this mistake.

If you didn't make this mistake then the issue must indeed be with the cables...

I've fiddled with it a whole bunch and it definitely seems like this cable is worth the buck I spent on it. Maybe I'll use it in some arts & crafts project. Thanks for the info and suggestions, guys. Any suggestion for a cheap, reliable interface? This is actually the first time I've used MIDI instruments with systems and other instruments.

Hi !
I use (successfully !) an inexpensive PRODIPE MIDI 1i/1o USB - MIDI
cable with my AN1x and other synths with Windows XP SP3.
Beware of Vista, if its lifetime was so short there was some reason...
MIDI - USB cables or cards is a recurrent topic on this forum : some
work and others not, whatever their brand or price. I guess there are
some drivers issues with ones, or hardware buffer size on others. These
can handle keyboard data (note, pitch bend ..) but not sysex messages.
Cheers.

No, MIDI is MIDI, and it comes from the early 1980's. It hasn't changed
in over 30 years. There are few interfaces with such a longevity, other
than power cables.

There used to be the "To Host" cables that you find on certain devices,
such as the Yamaha 01v digital mixer. This is essentially an RS232
interface with a special connector (mini-DIN) on one end.

MIDI interfaces from that era may not work with Vista, 7 and 8, but
that's probably because they require the host computer to do accurate
timing, or they simply never updated their drivers for the new OS. But
it has nothing to do with the MIDI connection itself.

The other half of the premise is also totally false. The AN1x was produced between 1997 and 1998, a time when Windows 95/98 ruled and 2000/XP were years away.

Peace, brothers & sisters !
AN1x edit runs well under Windows XP (and earlier versions of course).
Never tried with Vista (bullshit...) or Seven (much better).
You can install AN1x edit using an option in the setup menu, something
like "istall as" (i don't know the exact terms in english, i have a
"french" windows...), and start it the same. I guess it will work, but
i've never tried. If someone has tried the trick i would be happy to
know the results...
MIDI is MIDI : of course, troubles come with SOME MIDI - USB interfaces.
The reason(s) is (are) unclear and likely depend on the "faulty"
interface : driver compatibility ? buffer size ? others ? And there is
no "rule of the thumb" to choose it, cheap interfaces can work as
expensive ones don't, as the opposite.
On the forum site i remember there is a "MIDI interface topic", where
the "good" and "bad" ones are listed.
Cheers.

Is that cheap usb-to-midi cable made by Yamaha? If no, then why are you trying to install Yamaha drivers for it?
These cheap usb-midi cables are class compliant & don't need drivers installed. Furthermore, no one can guarantee or help if these things don't work with some older synths. Buy yourself a decent midi interface with recent drivers. Midisport or Motu for good example.

I have used the an1x editor on windows XP, 7 & 8 all working fine with my midi-usb interface. (edirol um-2)
But the error sounds familiar to me, I had the same with my microkorg.

At the end I found out that the korg could not receive or send midi messages. Even when it worked with other synths. After changing the settings it worked fine. Maybe the AN1x is not properly set to send or receive midi messages.?

Hi I'm late getting into this, but I can't use my MIDI interface with the AN1X on Windows 8. Yamaha has a driver site that supposedly will allow the AN1X to work with Windows 8. I haven't had any luck with it at all.

Yes Tom I have read your post. Well written. Thank you. I've tried an M Audio uno and another usb interface. Neither work. I'm using Reaper for a workstation. Both interfaces worked 6 months ago with Windows Vista.and Reaper.

Hi Jimmy,

Hi I'm late getting into this, but I can't use my MIDI interface with the AN1X on Windows 8. Yamaha has a driver site that supposedly will allow the AN1X to work with Windows 8. I haven't had any luck with it at all.

The other half of the premise is also totally false. The AN1x was produced between 1997 and 1998, a time when Windows 95/98 ruled and 2000/XP were years away.

There are M-Audio drivers for Windows 8, both 32 and 64 bit: http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support&tab=driver&serie_ID=4&PID=4f73c099681cb8ca6b0e91aca5d85b56&OS=x122#tabs

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
