Instruments that can host a Yamaha PLG-50 AN board

Instruments that can host a Yamaha PLG-50 AN board

2011-05-23 by Raul Altoja

In addition to the Motif series and AN200, the Yamaha CS6X keyboard and CS6R 2 space rack can accept the AN board. In fact the Yamaha CS6X and CS6R can accept 2 PLG boards.

The CS6X has more realtime controls than the CS6R but both have a logical programming interface at least with regard to the internal engine that plays back the sample waves in ROM.

You can only save edits you make on AN sounds as a file on a Smart Card. Also you need to save both the "ALL" file and the PLG data file in order to have your edits sound right.

The AN Power User guide is essential to understanding what is going on between the synth and the PLG card. If it isn't in our files section, I will post it later today.

There is a CS6R rack currently on Ebay for about $375 and they show up about once a month. I have a CS6R with the AN Plug In board and I love the filters and effects, but I just wish the PLG in card interface wasn't such a mess.

+1 to basically everything just said. I recently got rid my an1x for the
sake of a cs6x with plg150-an card. the sampling capabilities on the cs6x/r
are fantastic, but the plg interface is a mess. the cs6 is a really nice
workstation with lots of useable roms of organs, pianos, drums, etc and
since mine has an and dx series plg cards - it's a beast :)

if you could post that power user's guide - i'd really appreciate it. Plus -
is it just me or does the an editor not appear to work on vista (64 bit) ?
just want verification on that. the cs6 editor is great and works
fantastically, but i can't get the an editor to open up, let alone function.

thanks,

Nate

oh and one more thing: if you keep your eyes open, you can find cs6x's for
cheap. the cs6r's are a little more rare, but occasionally you'll find
someone looking to unload a cs6x because like the an1x, the interface is a
little un-user friendly, and not readily usable for inexperienced users.
I've seen them as low as $300-350, which is a STEAL for the capabilities.
Especially if you can find an an200 for $100-ish dollars that might be
broken/missing knobs, etc as you're just going to harvest it for the plg.

Not trying to be rude in anyway, but instead of the cs6x, you should also
ponder the s30 (cs6x minus phrase sampling but with a larger wave rom - can
load every cs6x sound. Only 1 plg slot compared to the cs6x/r:s two). I have
one and i love it.

Well, I still have the AN1x, and an EX5 (S). Does the CS6x with
PLG150-AN beat that combination? :)

(Mind, the EX5 is a flawed gem, and quite a few things are not working
quite as well as they should, but if the CS6x is a beast, then the EX5
is a whole bestiary.)

Note: the EX5 doesn't take PLG cards.

Regarding the s30...Does that synth have analog type sounds? Things like
glide / portimento? How many oscillators, etc?

Thanks

S30, has a typical Motif Classic Sound Engine, 4 elements per voice, each has
its own LFO, Amp EG, Pitch EG & Filter EG, multi filter types available, FX
routing, common voice setting & of course there're many synth waverforms (both
analog & digital)...

The AN Power User guide was already posted to our files section. Look under "Manuals & Guides." It is the next to last pdf file: "PLGan.pdf". Underneath it says: PLG150-AN Tutorial (Yamaha Power User).

Re: [AN1x] Instruments that can host a Yamaha PLG-50 AN board

2011-05-24 by Jeff

Hello !
it is a ROM based synth (Yamaha AWM2 samples), multimode filter, 64 note
polyphony and 16 voices (+ 1 : the plg card if any). It has some knobs
and sliders allowing some real time tweaking.... I don't know much more
details. There is a bigger version (88 keys, 2 plg card slots) called S80.
Look at : http://www.vintagesynth.com/yamaha/s30.php
Probably cheap second hand, cheaper than a CS6x which is some rare bird.
Cheers.
J.F.
