It pops and crackles! Is it gonna die?

2009-11-20 by Uwe

Help!

My beloved AN1X worked well for about 8 Years now, but in the last 6 month it starts making noises, like digital fragmentation, short blips and short noise sounds. The sound is still hearable, but more in the background.
When it started, the noises disappeared after a short while, but last week it lasteed throughout the session.
MIDI is still working, the display is fine, encoders are working.

I searched the board for the symtomps, but the results are quite disencourageing.

Any idea, if fixing is still provided by Yamaha?

Greetings,

tonmanns

This was a known fault on early models I believe. Does it do it more if you switch between scenes? What if you let it 'warm up' for 30 mins?

I did read someone on the web found some connections (on one of the ICs) was loose or something, may be worth opening it up to reseat CPU etc (if poss) and check it all. Try a new power supply (correct amps). If not then I guess it's the famous AN1x fault.

Looks like a solder joint suffering from thermal cycling... IMHO in the
audio section of the PCB. First things to look at : the output jacks and
the volume pot.
Other possible cause of failure : the connectors and ribbon cables. You
can clean the contacts with a cleaner fluid sold in electronics stores,
mostly in sprays. But if the failure is not at random, neither
permanent, but "time related" it means very often "heat related".
I suppose that "Yamaha approved" repair shops can still do the job,
because i don't think there is a bad chip to replace . But a time
consuming examination of the PCB, unless the problem is well known...
@+
J.F.
P.S. : what do you call "digital fragmentation" ? A kind of "chopped"
sound ? An aliasing noise ?

mine did the pops and clicks when my yam wallwart went barmy due to heat so i upgraded to a yam higher rated same voltage transformer and every thing was fine

the best thing is try this first before opening up machine

then once you have proved that its not the psu then open her up and check all ribbon cables as they can come loose then check all socketed ic,s as these can work there way out due to transport

Thanks for the suggestins so far!

I´m gonna try out and give a statement asap. Hope I can save it!

Greetings, tonmanns

BTW: Did someone ever program some "trancegated" sounds? I got some and will share them, when the machine is back to life!

Re: [AN1x] It pops and crackles! Is it gonna die?

I´m back after all

My blip problem did not solve yet, but I found out, that it only appears, when a sound is selected, that uses both scenes. As far as only one scene is active, my AN1X behaves quite well.

Any suggestions yet?

Greetings

Your AN1x is not going to die. This is a well-known issue, that can be
resolved by installing an OS update. But this involves swapping chips,
so it's perhaps not for everybody.

Hi !
do you use the mod' wheel for scene morphing ?
Cheers.

It solved my problem straight away and its not that difficult to do...

took me longer to unscrew the screw ont he case than the upgrade

Because with some (pair of) sounds it makes weird noises when you use
the mod wheel for "morphing", specially near the middle.

I think, this are the symptoms I am talking of. It only appears within the first 30 minutes after turning on the AN1X, then it works well.

BTW: Does anyone have a contact to YAMAHA, where I could ask for a spare OS chip? I posted a question on the official site, but another source for spare parts was helpful anyway

If you order by phone through tech department they will send them for you @ £18 + Postage of £3.50 and if you send your old roms back you get the 18 quid Back... result...

call on Yamaha 0844 811 1116 then option 4

I did this and they actually refunded the entire amount back to me once i had returned the old roms. I did this 2 months ago.

Hi,

Did your an1x make random pops and crackles when it was not being played? I had a similar problem that occured for about half an hour after switching the keyboard on, It would then just stop. I thought it might be related to the environment that the keyboard was in, a cold loft space with potential for damp air to circulate.

At about the same time, I started seeing the "Battery Low" messages on the LCD.

Since moving my studio to a warmer dryer room in the house and replacing the internal battery, the problem seems to have sorted itself out.

I hope this helps.

Miles

How are the ROMS mounted ? Is it a solder job or clip in ?

If i remember well the EPROM IC (only one piece) is simply plugged in a
standard IC socket. Not the "zero insertion force" type with a clip but
a standard socket... Of course you don't need any solder. Just remove
gently the old EPROM using a little screwdriver as a lever on both ends
of the IC, take the new one and put it firmly at the same place.
However, be careful :
- of the mark on the IC plastic case showing the nr 1 pin . "Good"
sockets wear the same kind of mark or dot one one end, so take your time
and look carefully at the initial position. If it's in a wrong position
it does not work, but normally it does no harm to the EEPROM (supply and
input - output voltages are equal on most logic ICs). My advice : you
better do it right first..
- to put all the (40, if i remember well) pins in the holes of the
socket, push on both ends of the IC : don't miss a row of pins, don't
bend them inside or outside the socket and so on.... A little useful
trick : take the IC by both ends and bend (yes..) a little the pins
against some hard surface to get a 90° angle between the pins and the
case, the mounting will be easier.
- of ESD (electro static discharge) if you work in a cold and dry
atmosphere wearing nylon, Polartec or other synthetic clothes. This is
one of the terrors of CMos ICs...

Cheers.
