Additional synth to accompany the AN1x

Additional synth to accompany the AN1x

2008-12-31 by stephen4306

Hello all,

I currently use an AN1x and a Roland SH-09 (plus a small number of
software plugins). I'm looking at adding a third hardware synth to my
setup, either a Waldorf Blofeld or a module such as the Roland
JV-1080. I'm into electronic stuff along the lines of Jarre/Vangelis
plus old school dance - trancey stuff mostly.

(I also have a novation nova desktop, not currently plugged in because
I don't have room for it! So a third option is to resurrect the
nova... and save on my hard earned cash!)

If you could choose a small setup consisting of AN1x plus two extra
synths what would you have?

Regards
Stephen

I would stick with the Nova - it's fairly deep and has three
oscillators, which can take it into sonic territory the AN1x cannot go.

The only problem I had with my Nova was it's non-standard mapping of
MIDI control numbers - they put the filter up around 109 or something
instead of the standard 74 for cutoff and 71 for resonance, making it
impossible for me to control the filter from my keyboard at the time
(a Roland XP-30 which would only map sliders up to CC #100). Anyway,
the programmable arpeggiator and latch button, plus individual effects
per channel, make that one a keeper if you already have it. It's well
suited for the type of music you mention.

Speaking of the XP-30, it's probably the best deal in the Roland JV/XP
line - for $450 or so you get a massive amount of patches and the
Orchestral and Session expansions (the two best ones for the JV/XP
series) are built in.

The Blofeld is nice. Also consider a Waldorf Micro Q if you're going
the wavetable route - essentially the same synth engine and cheaper,
plus it works with most Q patches.

Hi Stephen,

I'm using a MO8 (but all yamaha motif's have the same sound)
along with my AN1X and the couple makes wonders!
The Motif is really great-sounding waveform-based synth.
It sounds smoother than the AN1X. It's also have great pads
and other electo sounds.

When I play the two synths together, I like the way
they fit together. And since they sound really different,
they generally do not require any EQ do make them clear
and distinguishable.

Cheers,
Luc.

Create AN Pad

2009-01-01 by Marco Benatti

Dear all
Happy new year!!
I ve just bought an AN200 for christmas which basically has the same synth machine of the AN1 and I d like to create the same pad at the beginning of this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0VPpUODjeA&feature=channel_page

The pad was made with the an200.
If anyone of know how to syntesize a similar pad, please let me know.
Thank and best regards.
Marco

Hi Stephen !
the Nova is a pretty good synth, so unless you're tired of this kind of
sounds why don't you use it together with your AN1x?
Maybe do you want to add different tones ?
My favorite musical stuff (with keyboards, i play guitars too) is mostly
the "kraut rock" of the 70's, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze,
Kraftwerk.... OK, i got no modular Moog, no ARP 2600, too much
expensive, bulky and unreliable collector's gear ! And i don't like too
much software synths, i have some so called "software emulations" of
these glorious ancestors.... no knobs, no keyboard, you have to carry a
computer, add some master keyboard and MIDI controllers, and the sound
is often not worth the money.
I use my AN1x with 2 cheap and now obsolete "rare birds", an EVS1
Evolution (FM + PM + additive synthesis) and a Red Sound Elevata
(virtual analog). Each one has its own kind of sounds. The AN1x knobs
allow to tweak "live" some parameters of the EVS1, sometimes great for
FM pad sounds. The Red Sound V.A. adds some raw or edgy tones (12
dB/octave VCF ) and stunning "cosmic" FX sounds. Added with some
"robotic" sequencer lines from the AN1x you can get (IMHO) a decent "re
issue" of this kind of music.
What i would like to try : the Creamware "clones" of the Mini Moog or
the ARP Odyssey (but i've been told they are not very reliable), and the
Arturia Origin (interesting concept, a hardware platform for software
plugins). And again 2 small companies, like the now defunct Evolution
and Red Sound we've seen previously...
Cheers and a happy new year to you all.
J.F.

Mibrilane,

Thanks for the comments. I agree that the third osc on the nova is a plus point, as is that wonderful arpeggiator! I think I might just dust it off and give it another chance. If it stays, problem solved, if not then I'll spend some time looking into the waldorfs.

Now if they did a blofeld with the microkorg's form factor I'd snap one up just to chill out on the sofa with!

Stephen
