Hi, I recently bought a Yamaha AN1x off eBay and I am enjoying every feature of the awesome synth. However, every time I switch the synth on after it being switched off for a while I can hear annoying clicks and crackles on some presets. After a few minutes the annoying sound disappears. Is the clicks and crackles normal or is there a fault? If it is a fault is there any way I can fix it? Please advise Arthur

Yamaha was forthcoming in acknowledging the problem and it's resolution. I had the problem addressed by Yamaha while my AN1x was still under warranty (purchased autumn '98, repaired spring '99.) The repair is referred to by Yamaha as a "factory modification". The synth will need to be returned to a Yamaha facility. Authorized Yamaha Service Centers are not equipped to affect the repair. It is a hardware repair and does not register on the diagnostic equipment used by your local tech - yes, you have to use your ears for this one. Yamaha Customer Service will provide a 'Return Authorization Number' in advance of the instrument being shipped to them. I've no idea what Yamaha's policy on out-of-warranty repairs is or how much it will cost. Hope this helps. Regards, Jon

Thanks for your reply. This is bad news as I am not prepared to send the AN1x back to be repaired as its nearly a 10 year old instrument and no doubt I will be charged alot of money for the repairs as the warranty has probably ran out. I am feeling p***** off has the guy on eBay sold me the AN1x for £250 UK POUNDS. I will live with the pops and clicks as its only noticable when the synth is first powered on after being switched of for a while. After a few minutes the pops and clicks disappear. Cheers. Hi Arthur ! try to get some refund from your dealer, on E-Bay the bad guys are quickly known . A similar thing happened to a Czchek guy and he has a part of his repair paid by the dealer (missing notes problems) ... Another thing is to ask Yamaha about your problem, normally all the sold devices have been modified for free, why not yours ? Cheers ! J.F. Hi, I bought the AN1x from a private seller on eBay with 100% good feedback. He even let me pick it up from his house and let me have a demo play of the AN1x before I bought it. I only noticed this problem when I switched the synth on the next day. I doubt very much if he will pay for the repair as feedback has already been given. Right, the problem is not severe enough to worry about a repair at this late date. > > I am feeling p***** off has the guy on eBay sold me the AN1x for > £250 UK POUNDS. I can appreciate your aggravation. When I had the repair performed by Yamaha - way back when - it took much longer than was necessary because the dealer had not actually sent it to Yamaha as they told me they had for many weeks on end(!) Yamaha on the other hand was great and turned over the repair in two weeks. > > I will live with the pops and clicks as its only noticable when the > synth is first powered on after being switched of for a while. It doesn't appear to have any long term, catastrophic effect on the synth. If memory serves, I think Peter K's mentioned the output of his AN1x will sometimes degrade into stactic noise once in a blue moon, but a reset clear the issue. Hope this helps. Regards, Jon

We (members of the old Teklab AN1x-list) were never able to determine how many of were adversely affected by the problem, but we believed it was limited to early production models. No way to prove it one way or the other. If it's any consolation, there are 1200+ subscribers to this (nearly) six year old AN1x-list (we replaced the Teklab list) and the subject rarely comes up - once or twice a year from a new owner of unit that has passed hands :-) It's a nice synth to play, sounds great - particularly given it's vintage (hahahaha '97 hahahaha) - makes a decent controller keyboards and offers many musical goodies to boot (step seq/arp, ribbon controller, Ctrl Matrix, etc.) Let us know how it goes when you take delivery of your AN1x. Hi Bob ! don't worry too much about that : only some early machines are affected with these unwanted noises. Mine is second hand (from 97) , i don't have any noise problem, hot or cold ! This is a very interesting machine, both controller keyboard and vintage oriented "pseudo analog" synth , with real time control on most parameters. Okay it is not labelled Nord Lead or Access, it has less knobs to tweak, but play it, listen and ... tell us ! Cheers J.F.
