connecting foot pedals

What's the difference between the foot switch, foot controller and
foot volume inputs?

I once bought this behringer fcv-100, but never got it to work properly
http://namm.harmony-central.com/SNAMM03/Content/Behringer/PR/FCV100.html
I think i have to connect it with a stereo jack (that i don't have),
can anyone confirm?

I also have this boss fs-5l laying around. Can i use this one as well?
http://www.roland.co.jp/products/boss/image/ABFS/FS-5L.jpg

Also will the an1x output a midi signal if i press a pedal? I'd like
to use the pedals to control filters and record loops in Ableton live.

The Footswitch (FS) socket is typically used for discrete on/off
switch such as a sustain pedal, or contact switch/pedal (similar to
your Boss FS-51 pedal. I don't believe the Boss pedals output the
correct polarity to be used with a Yamaha keyboard. I don't recall
off the top of my head whether the polarity can switch on the AN1x
itself - check the manual. Some pedals allow you to swap the
polarity on the pedal itself.

The Behringer pedal is a continuous contoller and can be used in
either the Footcontrol (FC) or Foot Volume (FV) jacks. Either can
be reprogrammed unde the Utility Cntl menu item on the AN1x. The
default for the FV is MIDI CC #007 (Volume) which affects the
overall volume level of the AN1x. If memory serves, the default for
FV is MIDI CC #001 for Modulation which would duplicate the function
of the Mod Wheel on the front panel (I might be mistaken, it could
default to something like Filter Cutoff...) Again, either can be
reprogrammed to any other MIDI CC value so you could use your
continuous controller pedal as a foot switch, or you could connect a
discreet on/off pedal to the FC or FV jacks without issue.

Foot switch : it is an "on/off" control .
Foot controller is a pedal with a potentiometer inside .
Both can be affected with any MIDI controller number (see your MIDI
implementation chart in the AN1X manual) .
The first one gives only 2 states , 0 or 1, and can be used , for
example , as a sustain pedal that removes all the "note off" MIDI
messages . But could do something else like turning on or off something
(voice , effect ...) when you're playing .
The other sends data between 0 and 127 depending on the position of the
pedal (= pot) that can be used to "tune" a filter , add an amount of
reverb or anything else "continuously" variable (in fact it is not
because MIDI works with binary data , not voltage or current !) .
The foot volume is a stereo pot inside a pedal and is purely analog .

Yes , but you can do something else simpler : put your universal stereo
pedal between the output of the synth (2 cables) and the input of your
amplifier or mixer (2 other cables) . This will work with any instrument
, allowing you to use it with other instruments (keyboard , guitar ,
drum box ...) .

Yes ... or no ! It depends on what is the contact inside : normally
closed , normally open or inverter ... I don't know what's inside the
Yamaha equivalent pedal ...

I'm quite sure that the MIDI messages of your external controllers are
send on the MIDI out channel of your synth such as the internal
controllers (mod wheel , pots ..) are . But their effect depends on the
controller number affected to each one .
