Seems the mystery has been solved. I have both Revision B (with IC2) and Revision C (with IC3) so it seems that the PCB was designed with two different chips

Yes, you can use the polyphonic expansion on a CS6X. From the PLG150-AN manual: POLYPHONY : 5 notes maximum (latest note priority; polyphony is expandable *1)
