guessing something is drawing more power like you noticed.. it may be beyond simple fixes, take to repair place.

Otherwise, you will have to dig in. You will need a service manual and some equipment to check it out. Most in this area charge $45 an hour or so, unit is worth? Hard call, I know I be digging in on it but there is a tie where even I would either give to someone with a service manual or buy another.

One idea I would do, (note I said " I ", may not be for you), pull the synth board out, power it up and see what it does. I read in a few posts that the unit works with the board out as a midi controller/sequencer.
All that will tell you is, if it starts to behave right, the synth card is pulling in the power, as that is what I am thinking, a big draw... all guess work without seeing the unit and knowing the service manual.

Review the cost to repair to a used one.

You did say for a while there you did use a 9 volt power supply and not the 12. There is a chance that the lower supply may have damaged the unit over time.

All I said was basic electronic TS stuff... if you can review the service manual, there might be some clear notes in there that mention this type of failure.

I asked about the cables in case of a floating ground, bad plug in the unit shorting out etc. Thought it best to ask if you gave it a try with all removed other than power. Wasn't if Jon that asked if the power plug was tight? I am sure you checked that too right?

With all the cables removed it does the same thing. But it's erratic
and unpredictable. One minute it works fine, next minute it restarts.

I also noticed that there is a humming noise present that gets less
intense if the volume is in the middle, at 12 o'clock. If the volume
gets increased or reduced, the humming gets louder. (and sometimes it
restarts) Also, if you decrease any of the parameters using the panel
knobs the flickering seems to subside. It's almost as if the unit is
drawing too much power when the LED's are all lit up. The more LED's
lit, the more it flickers, and the more likely it will reboot. This
includes the segmented display, keypad, and little red LED's. It's
gotta be a power supply problem. I've tried replacing the wall wart
to no effect, so it must be interior. Sometimes just tapping on the
unit makes it reboot, but like I said, I checked for loose
connections between the boards, and loose grounds.

  I'm lost!
