No, USB is not a driver-free technology. You still have to install drivers.

Windows 2000 supports USB, so when your Midi-interface manufacturer supplies 
Win2000 drivers, you're in.

I haven't checked the Midiman site (www.midiman.net) about the Win2k support 
yet. But if you've got nothing to do, you can do it yourself :)
