For the Poly 800? 9V at something approaching 1A is more like the thing, and the exact voltage is unimportant since it hits the voltage regulator first.
Below about 8V you will run into reliability issues and above about 12V you'll start to overheat the big power tranny in the series pass regulator.
Bear in mind that even with the "correct" 9V adaptor it is not regulated and will provide anything from about 8.5V to about 11V depending on how close your incoming mains is to its nominal value.
