The MSM5232 tone generator chip is incredibly simple and limited. I am
totally amazed at how good the Poly 800 sounds given that Korg used
that particular tone generator. It was indeed designed for Arcade
style games. Yet, you put a decent filter in front of the MSM5232 and
it sounds great.

Of course, it would be possible to add another waveform generator into
the Poly 800 because you could intercept the original MSM5232 tone
generator at the resistor ladders where the square vs triangle is
selected. However, the mod would probably cost more than a DW-8000 so
what would the point be? Why not just buy a DW-8000?

Truth is though, I think that we probably could develop a mod that
would use a different TG. I just think that there are only so many
years one gets in this life and to add a different TG may not be
something any of us ever get to.
