I recently did this mod (about 2-3 weeks ago) on my Poly800 (original MK1). I found and used two different internet articles on this mod (each were a little bit different, one was atom smasher the other some german site I had to translate with altavista and he used all blue wires so I couldn't translate what cable went to what pot, etc. real dumb!). I tried the following different ohmages on my pots: (10k, 50k and 100k). I think I am using the 10k for cutoff and 100k for resonance at the moment. It works ok, but I am not totally satisfied with the range on this yet, so I will probably screw with it some more, but for now these ohmages worked better than using 50k ohm pots for both cutoff and resonance IMO (more range and effect). I recommend testing different ohmage pots to find the way you like it best. Also, be sure that once you have made this mod that you set your resonance and cutoff levels (using the parameter buttons not the knobs themselves to say 50 for cutoff (41) and not more than 12 for resonance (42) or you will hear some awful loud squelching.
Out of both mod articles the moog slayer says to cut in to the power line, remove the diode on the grounding plate (cardboard piece) and solder into the power line etc. etc. (kindof a pain). Well, when I used this mod, I lose my patches every stinkin time I turn it on (remember I have a brand new internal battery and holder (which works fine BTW). I think by hooking into the power line it is screwing things up, so I just used the other mod which is to just wire the new knobs right into the pots (holes, since the original pot must be removed). I don't have the lost patches as much anymore with it like this and I can actually hear the changes as I tweak the knobs.
Definately use audio taper pots they are different.
www.digikey.com has them and lots of other cool stuff like the battery holder mod etc.
I don't know, this mod was fun, but not really as effective as I was hoping. I spent like $30 on different knobs, battery holder etc., so not too bad, but perhaps not worth the time and money for many. I do wish there was more info on it and better photo tutorials.
The black wire probably goes to the ground plate right next to the power supply area (a little cardboard tab on the edge of the board...though I am not sure without pictures. As for you not hearing any sound anymore...Well, that is most likely because you have lost all your patches and you need to reload them from tape or sysex if you have the MKII. Do this everytime you make changes to the mod, or make sure you have a good internal battery (I recommend the battery mod too since you are in there...it's really easy) AND get some C batteries for the keyboard itself too if you can. I don't know about you all, but I lose my patches all the time even with a brand new internal battery in it. Just reaload from tape from your computers sound card it's easy enuf.
Hope some of this helps.
In the atom smasher example you see 50 k pots.....I used 50 k
