Subject: Re: [Mellotronists] GMedia M-Tron

I bought m-tron (full version) earlier this year, with the intent ofexporting the sounds as .wav files, looping them and dropping them intomy sampler.  Looping them is sort-of heresy, I know, but I do findthat the violins in particular work very well w/slow attack/release& synthesiser filtering.

I must admit, even though I don't have a real mellotron to compare themwith, the sounds aren't what I'd hoped for.   I'd noticedthat the shrill flute note was missing, and the flute sounds in anycase aren't as good as the ones on my old tronsonics dat tape from over10 years ago.  The samples I made from the tronsonics dat on myold peavey dpm-sp sampler (!!) work in the mix better than using them-tron VST, I've found.

The mk2 "vintage violins" are ok, but a lot of the other mk2 soundssupplied are pretty horrible.  A lot of the sounds seem muddy andhissy, almost a caricature of what people might expect a real mellotronto sound like.  The birotron sounds are so wretched, it'sunbelievable.  I wouldn't have even put them on the disc, ifthat's the best tapes I had!

Even though I noticed the shrill flute note being missing, I hadn'tclicked that there were other notes missing from the sets, that'spretty lame.  It's a bit of a let-down allround, really (actually, most of the vst instruments I've tried have been a bit of alet down, 2 hon. exceptions being the korg wavestation and the freeware"crazy diamonds" string synth)

Really, all I want is a set of good quality (44/16 would be good enoughfor me) samples of violins, flutes, mixed brass, cellos, male choir, female choir and, er, the other well-known choir, (whatever it is)presented as is from the instrument - no re-tuning, I can do thatmyself if I want to.  Once I get the waves set up as I want them, saved and backed up, they're obviously fairly easily transferrable fromone instrument to another.

It would be nice to have a real mellotron, and not have this faff, butlike a lot of people, I have neither the budget or the space.  Itwould be good if streetly were to consider producing a set ofkontakt/kompakt instruments, one for each tapeset in the library, purchasable seperately.  It would be good if somebody did itPROPERLY, and m-tron has queered the pitch for vst instruments, itseems to me.  If somebody "official" doesn't do this (properly), Ithink it's inevitable that some regular sound library co. will do it,quite possibly not properly.
