Subject: Optigan disc

Hey hey,

I think as an idea the Optigan/orchestron/chilton talentmaker disc is great.
The loops and sounds are really interesting. Amazing to have all the discs
ready to go...

The only question I have is always going to be in that sample directory "
where is the sound I want ? " feeling.

If I would be stepping through samples and stumbled across Stylophone
#1....I don't think the odds are that great that I'd use it. But with a real
one when you understand how your playing effects the sound et.c it makes a
lot more sense.

When someone sits down at an Optigan, Orchestron or a Chilton talentmaker in
my studio it usually just takes somewhere between 5 - 10 minutes before that
person says " I have written a song ! ".

Would people spend that time with a keyboard attached to a sampler or a
computer ?

I think the same thing goes for every Sample CD. If you don't have the
actual instrument in front of you you tend to use sounds you are familiar
with from other recordings et.c. Sounds you know sound o.k and will work as
" wow it is a Mellotron ". So with the Mellotron it'll be the flutes, 3
violins, choirs et.c and with the Talentmaker ?

I must admit I have never worked with the a sampler but I do know that
despite the wide array of amazing sample CDs like the ones from the good
people at Mellotron Archives the sounds you usually get to hear are still
gonna be those meat and potatoes Flutes/3 violins and cello.

I guess I'm just a bit surprised that I don't hear more Optigan rhythms and
organs on the radio or on tv considering how great they are. I guess when
you go through a sample directory they don'ty catch your ear the same way as
when sitting at the instrument contemplating wether you are going to flip
the disc upside down or tape another disc on top...
