From my experience the real thing still wins! Smpled every note, full duration for a friend into a top end Yamaha sampler and as soon as you play chords the Mellotron wins hands down even though these are samplws of the same machine.
Same with a Fairlight although strangely the Fairlight samples we put onto Mellotron tapes get very close to a real Fairlight which was odd and very ironic...
