Subject: mellotron workshop - philly december 11 2004.

From: Jeff Coulter <jeffc@...>
Date: 2004-10-26

as part of the shameless self-promotion/marketing thread...

after the RMI show back in may, chuck van zyl - who runs
"the gatherings" series here in philly, asked me if i
would be interested in doing a mellotron workshop.
[as you may recall, both myself and jimmy moore loaned
out our trons for the RMI show - it was magical]
chuck also hosts "star's end" - a space music radio
show that has been running for over 20 years now - our
list member gino used to do the show - i was training
to be part of the crew back in the late 70s, but never
did acquire my FCC license [a requirement at the time].

sorry - i digress with probably FAR too much background
information...

so... i will be hosting/MCing the mellotron workshop
here in philly on december 11th. both jimmy moore and
gino wong have agreed to help out for the evening.
word has it via jimmy that pierre might be making the
trip down from canada to help demonstrate the capabilities
of the mellotron when in the hands of a master. anyone
who has witnessed pierre's skills will surely agree
that there is no better person to showcase the potential
of a mellotron.

the final agenda has not been set, but i gather from chuck's
previous synthesizer workshop that this is intended to
exhibit to the layperson exactly what this instrument
is all about, why there is such a "cult" sourrounding
it, some of the history, trivia, technology [or, as it
were, lackthereof in today's microchip-dominated world],
and most importantly - the SOUND!

<sarcasm>
i hope to get a set of tapes installed as part of the
evening's proceedings - how exciting will that be for
the uninitiated?! oooooh...
</sarcasm>

details are not yet set, but it will most likely be in
the same church as the RMI show was held - it's on the
university of pennsylvania campus at st. mary's church.

more info will be posted at: http://www.thegatherings.org
and to the list as it all comes together over the next
few weeks. if i recall, admission to the synthesizer
workshop was $20 [less for students w/ID] but that is
up to chuck van zyl.

thanks to jimmy and gino for helping out.
maybe some of you can make it, though i doubt there
will be much covered that you do not already know.
maybe you can come just to humiliate me and my lack
of public speaking prowess.

more to follow...
jeff

btw: duncan? are you still out there? i can't recall the
last time we heard from you! are you okay? the RMI web
site has been pretty quiet too...
