Subject: Mk2 to M-400 design

The Mk1 and Mk2 are certainly beautiful pieces of
furniture...beautiful woods, thick polished shellac...and even a
matching bench. So why does the M-400 look so...so...basic?
Is this because musicians demanded a more roadworthy unit, or was it
just because the articulate outward craftsmanship was a bit too
spendy? I gather a possibility might have been the way M-400s were
marketed more towards active touring musicians, and the Mk2 was more
directed to the family living room decor.
Am I right or wrong....or?
