Yes, I was stunned when I read the news today. I've always loved hismusic, and he will be sorely missed.
His last album, Figure 8, is my favorite. On one or two tracks there iswhat sounds to me more like Mellotron than Chamberlin, although notcredited. A bit grittier than a Chamberlin. Samples perhaps.
Listen to "Everything Means Nothing to Me" and "Can't make a sound".There's a distinct Mk II style key click at the end of the latter as itfades out. OTOH, Jon Brion is credited with backup vocals on the album.

I just heard some very bad news. Elliott Smith, 34, hasjust died in Los Angeles of an apparent suicide.
He was an excellent singer / songwriter who used a Chamberlin onhis recordings (played by Jon Brion?). I caught him on Saturday NightLive once, complete with Chamberlin. His CD "XO" still gets heavyrotation in my car's CD player. I know that he had at least a coupleof fans on this list.
He will be missed.
