Boy, the old farts are coming out of the woodwork on this one!
I saw the Moody Blues in 1970 at the Fillmore East (Lee Michaels who
opened had the loudest B3 set-up ever created!), but I had an earlier
chance to hear a mellotron live which was King Crimson. I'd never heard
of them and so when I was offered a chance to review the concert for
the NYU student newspaper, I decided I had too much homework,
practicing, etc. and took a pass. I've been kicking myself ever since
(except the DGM kindly put the concert I missed on a CD a few years
back). Crimson got me started, the Moodies laid the foundation and
Genesis (Foxtrot tour) put the final nail in the coffin. I bought a 400
from Mellotronics in 1973 and got my present instrument in 1974. All
the bands I played that in were after me to buy a Solina instead.
Funny, they didn't complain about the B3 as much...
Many years later, I met Martin Smith and I was instantly cured. He has
that effect on a lot of people, I suspect.
