Dear Mr. Zappa (or is that Mr. Boggs?),
I would tend to disagree. I also listened to the cut, and although I admire immensely anyone producing this type of music (cheers Brady!), the sound that is supposed to be "mellotron" to me sounds nothing like a mellotron at all, whatsoever (is the wording clear enough?) Sounds like a string synthesizer (which is fine by me, as I also like those sounds.) But you shouldn't use this as a basis for eliminating the possibility that samples (not the real thing) cannot sound like the real thing.
I have A/B'd my "real thing" (M400 #1001) against my samples, and after equalization and verb (and any other appropriate but necessary studio magic) can obtain equally pleasing results, at least to me. Important to start with the right samples.
Cheers,
roc
P.S. Mr. Arnold, if you are still listening, we should talk.
P.S.2. Pet peeve. Mellotronists "hung up" on whether it is real or not.

I kind of like the cut... but, the tron sounds are a
perfect example of the differences between the real
thing and not the real thing...
Kind of sounds like Wakeman 2003....
