This is really a good thread. When first I read it I was seriously trying to
think of bands that were from the U.S. in the first place, let alone using
Mellotrons. So my mind cast back to that era - Paul Revere and the Raiders?
Naaah. Grass Roots? Three Dog Night? Barry McGuire? Strawberry Alarm Clock?
Byrds? Airplane? Any Mellotron in there? The first "mainstream" I can think
of is Aerosmith, but that can't be the first.

Three Dog Night - supposed to be big Chamberlin users.
Byrds - 'Jesus is Just Alright' on 'Ballad of Easy Rider'.
Airplane - Kantner/Slick and Kantner/Slick/Freiberg albums, plus early
Starship.

To my knowledge... :-)
