Subject: RE: [Mellotronists] RE:first mellotrons in rock

This is really a good thread. When first I read it I was seriously trying to
think of bands that were from the U.S. in the first place, let alone using
Mellotrons. So my mind cast back to that era - Paul Revere and the Raiders?
Naaah. Grass Roots? Three Dog Night? Barry McGuire? Strawberry Alarm Clock?
Byrds? Airplane? Any Mellotron in there? The first "mainstream" I can think
of is Aerosmith, but that can't be the first.

Fuse (Rick Nielson's band pre-Cheap Trick) toured with a 'Tron in 1968.
Ethos used both a Chamberlin and a Mellotron; I saw them live.

Well I assume you mean in recorded "big name" rock. The Moodies made
it REALLY up front and famous. The Stones used it on Satanic
Majesties.Graham Bond was mentioned...of course the Fab Four used it
on Mystery Tour.
As far as known album acts from America using it regularly...ETHOS
from Indiana(early 70s) on Capitol...Mike Quatro from Detroit used it
live and on all his records...and of course I acquired my M-400 #328
in Dec.72 but I never was in a big name recording act(hee hee)using
it first in a band called STARGATE in Ohio.Steve Miller Band used it
on CHILDREN OF THE FUTURE but probably never toured with it.Beach
Boys used it on record (Wild Honey).Blues Image(RIDE CAPTAIN RIDE)
used a Chamberlin.
