Hi Brian/all
I had just sent Andy an e-mail to his website last week with the same observations:
Sorry I hadn't replied to your mail - had to download a copy of the album (don't own anything by 'em), and haven't got round to playing it yet!
definitely Mk II flute in "Mr. Kite" - plays the opening line melody and turnaround line over the Gm A Dm figure. The instrumentation there is Mk II flute, bass, sounds like harmonium, and accordian (tron or real, anyone)? I hear the Mk II strings in "Lovely Rita" doubles the piano in the break at 1:12 to 1:22. Very reverbed. Is there any Mk II brass or mixed, or sax in "Good Morning, Good Morning"?
Well, it has to be said, a whole can of worms has been opened here! That Beatles Sessions book (Mark Lewisohn?) only lists the 'Magical Mystery Tour' and 'White Album' stuff, but it seems you're all hearing it all over the shop. Since I constantly strive to keep my reviews accurate, I'm going to try to listen to as many of these as poss, but it's an almost impossible task, especially when it's so often buried in the mix. Shame nobody here's got a direct line through to Macca... :-)
As far as the Stones' 'Satanic Majesties' is concerned, I can hear it on six of the album's ten tracks, but I'm notoriously bad at spotting the less-obvious Mark II sounds. Apart from the obvious 3 violins/flutes/mixed brass, there may well be saxes, and possibly even sound FX. Anyone?
