This is really a discussion for the synth-diy list, but what the
heck.

(For those who don't know about it, "synth-diy" is a long-running
email forum for synthesizer builders. It's probably the friendliest
and most intelligent place on the web with the greatest level of
knowledge sharing. Highly recommended.)

If I were doing it, I would have a microprocessor scanning the
keyboard, immediately sending out CV, gate and trigger signals, and
then when there were extra free cycles, pop midi commands into the
uart. But perhaps Bob does something better.

How to test it, indeed. One way would be to scope both gate signal
and the midi output at the same time and see which responds first and
by how much.
