<< Does anyone know what processor box is used to get a pre-reverb or
reverse reverb effect? The Beach Boys tune "Feel Flows" has this
effect on the vocals. I know how to duplicate this effect with a
digital audio editor...(reverse it, add reverb and reverse it again).
How was this accomplished on recordings 30 years ago? I don't think
they used a digital audio editor. >>
I haven't tried this (because there aren't any compressors in our studio
bigger than a fuzzbox, and there are many reasons why this is the case) but
I'd imagine that ducking the reverb's output with the source signal and
letting it "recover" slowly would fade the reverb up in the sort of
counter-intuitive way you intend. this might be most effective with a gated
reverb, so it snaps off abruptly too. reversing the tape (or digits) is still
the best way if it isn't live, though.
I'd have to listen to the track- what year was it? this'd give us a clue as
to how bonkers brian might've achieved it.
andy- I'm pretty sure that TD ditched the 'trons just as soon as they were
able to; having schlepped them around to more gigs and in greater quantity
than almost any other band ever. almost. I'm being extra-specially careful to
qualify that remark because someone's bound to mention KC or greenslade or
gentle giant or the moodies.... TD used to have at least one each on stage,
because they were such an unfriendly bunch of bastards with each other- never
socialised- and couldn't bring themselves to even move about on stage, let
alone share instruments. I remember taking the 'tron helm at an early gig of
ours, while steve wandered off to hits pads or something, and someone asked
us afterwards if this was because something had gone wrong, all this swapping
places on stage. good grief.
TD'd obviously tired of them by "cyclone" (early 78) because they were using
them less obviously, had loops in them, and had the first generation of poly
synths in the arsenal by then. I don't think there's any real 'tron on
anything after "cyclone" but then I don't really know their material after
this point anyway. it's minimal on this album. steve might remember- he saw
them on that tour- but I doubt they used them live after 1978.
"force majeure" (1979) is the last album I bought, and there's no gear list
(odd, for them) on the cd version. the vinyl version.... you'd be hard-pushed
to hear any detail on it anyway, on that crackly clear vinyl.... (all vinyl
would be clear were it not for the antistatic carbon impregnation; they sure
made a mess of this pressing). a quick spin of FM reminds me that there is a
ton of string synth, and much drummage, and that faked guitar solo we argued
over on the goldtri list a few years back. no 'tron. I'm taking the cd off
again now because it sucks bigly.
I ∗do∗ know where some of the tapesets are though. about three feet away.
