Subject: Mr. Dickson's Tunes

From: "Ken Leonard" <ken@...>
Date: 2007-11-18

I've been listening to Mike Dickson's two albums he has made
available to us.

These albums are weirding me out---my brain can't figure out if it
just likes them in passing or if they'll dig in and get lots of
spins. Generally they're amazingly full of instrumentation (very
thick arrangements for a lot of it), and I suppose why I'm ambivalent
is I'm one of those who likes something a bit more rhythmic and
cohesive, whereas these tunes seem to move around a bit and don't
lock into a solid "tune". There's also not a lot of build/release; a
lot stays on the same level throughout (with one or two exceptions).
So I've listened to these several times, and occasionally my mind
says "what's all this then?"...but then I keep listening.

A lot of the electronic stuff I've been buying lately from the usual
Berlin School Emporia has been extremely disappointing. "Hi, I have
a sequencer, and I'll let it run for half an hour." OK, I need a
break. Mike brings in a variety of electronic and other instruments
that does get away from that other stuff and presents you with
something a little different, although he still uses some
synths/sequencers.

Despite my addled brain, I'd like to thank Mike for those! (Well, if
he's still out here somewhere, that is. :-) ) It has certainly made
for interesting listening AND a welcome break from the EM Tedium.
