the instrument was probably just neglected.
they really don't like that.

i used to plug a crappy farfisa into an electro-harmonix phaser and
flanger to obtain a "tronnish quality' before i actually owned one.
at the time it was quite 'effective' to my ears. i still have the
crappy farfisa - it has not been plugged in for years, and is probably
quite dead, or at least very ill.
