Subject: [Mellotronists] Calling All Ears - Trying to Get *That* Sound

Hi Ken and all,
The sound of the Moodies, according to Tony Clarke, was definitley a miked stack, plate reverb, top end of MKII eq'd out of existence (MKIIs are incredibly bright), two or three passes with bags of swell pedal control. If you listen, the sound got better and better as the albums progressed. Incidentally, to prove the swell pedal point, Mike P played the glorious passages on Watching and Waiting in one take, using the plate to carry the sound as he faded the next chord in. It sounds too good to be a straight take (done twice as I recall) but Mike has metronomic timing(according to TC) and his intonation and performance show this.
However, the fabulous crescendos on Question were created using a splicing block.
Tony Clarke drinks lager.
Best,
Martin
