Thinking out loud, too.  The M4000 guts photo from

a M4000 would retro-fit in an old M400 (with obvious
case modifications)?  Maybe it was just the Fat Tire
Ale talking...

OK, sounds like were on the same page here.

From my posting to the list back in 2002.......

"Whatever happened to the idea floating around for a "cycling" M400?  If those were available, you could have more sounds at hand and the cost / sound ratio would be much lower than the tape frame scenario.  Could you imagine having 18 sounds (or twelve or nine) at your fingertips on an M400?  Better yet, a "cycling" retrofit kit for existing M400s.  Then current M400 owners would have access to all the sounds they wanted.  Of course, I am only dreaming here.  But you asked.  I'm sure that, even if one could do this, there's no guarantee of financial success for the creators.  JB, I think you should work on a prototype in your spare time ;-). "

I'll be interested to see if the M4000 guts will be available as a retrofit to existing M400s.  From what I've seen, it looks like the M4000 is deeper than an M400, so you may not be able to do this.  I'm thinking that those two drums may be too big for an M400 cabinet, but wouldn't it be great if you could stuff it all in an M400 somehow.
