The first time I heard an amplified Mellotron was at an Angel concert at what used to be an old movie theatre.  How many of you out there remember the 3 Violins on "Tower"?

Oh yes  :-)   Ludicrous band, but that first album IS pretty cool in an OTT sort of way... Plenty more 'Tron on the record, too, and all their others, despite the increasingly awful music...
