Subject: Re: dw8000 component test (and info about doing "surgery" on your DW8000)....

Hello,

This is my first post on this group.

I recently found two DW8000s for sale, and I bought both - one had 3 keys that were broken on the bottom, but was otherwise playable and functional. The other one had a good keyboard and the electronics worked, except that there was no headphone output, and only the right channel worked on the regular output.

So, I took both home and attempted surgery on both, in order to come up with one DW8000 that was good. I spend hours swapping out various boards between the two DW8000s. Here's what I found out:

1) The output jacks' electronics are on one of the two FRONT PANEL boards (weird, huh? - I eliminated all other possibilities by swapping out ALL circuit boards);
2) The chorus board from the DW8000 that had the EARLIER serial number seemed to sound slightly better than the later board (could just be my imagination, but I tried it twice with each board);
3) The battery is indeed soldered on (fortunately, mine tested at slightly over 3VDC);
4) DW8000s are old enough to NOT have the fragile and annoying flat ribbon cable (as found on the M1) - all connections are small connectors that you can unplug (I recommend labeling each one to the connector number on the board you remove it from, as you remove them);
5) When screwing the case back together, do NOT use too much force, as the plastic screw risers tend to break off.

To answer the original poster's question: I will upload the service manual file to this group's files section tonight.

John

Is there anywhere on the planet that has instructions to individually test the individual circuit boards contained inside the dw800. i'm pretty good with a volt/ohm meter but complex d.c. circuit are pretty much over my head w/o some guidance. knowing which circuit boards are good and which are fried would go a long way
