That's interesting!
Haven't seen poplar in (German) DIY stores though, _except_ in plywood,
where it sees to be very popular. (no pun intended)

That would even be better, but it's certainly more difficult to do.
That's why I was recommending a band of harder wood (beech) in an
enclosure otherwise made from a softer wood, for putting screws in.
Not as good as machine screws into threaded metal inlays, but almost.
