Hi Ryk,

Sorry you lost your wood (sounds like a card from Hallmark... or
Viagra). Have you looked at Internet / mail order wood supply places?
For lumber, I mean. This place:
www.woodcraft.com
looks to have a great selection of hardwoods, tools, veneers, stains,
etc. They also have a retail shop about two blocks from where I work.
They stock an amazing assortment of 'exotic' woods. It's cool to just
walk in and see a big plank of Paduak or Zebrawood or Teak or Maple
or... well you get the idea - they got lotsa stuff! Unfortunately,
they're in the US, so that may or may not be of much help to our
friends on the other side of the pond(s). I also see veneers, lumber,
and woodworking stuff on ebay all the time.

Now I know this might be considered sacrilege, but have you considered
wood veneer over either cheap/sturdy wood or even metal panels? A real
wood veneer can be stained and finished just like a bigger piece of
lumber (check the Elm Burl veneer at the Woodcraft web site... about
$500 for a 4' x 8' sheet! It's beautiful though). Also, if you're
getting any panel flex, you might want to attach a metal L bracket to
the backside of said panels.
