Becuase of the way in which VHDL code is written, it easily lends itself to
working with modules.
You can also 'extract' modules quite easily from VHDL.
have a look at the code on fpga.synth.net, you'll see it's easily readable,
and because of it's 'parallel' nature, each section is normally written as a
module..

Agreed, the initial learning curve (ie. getting you head around what it is
and how to use it) is a bit mindnumbing, but once you've got the basics of
the VHDL syntax, it becomes very easy to get upto speed on the more complex
modules.
