I'll just drop my .02 into the bucket here, as others have pretty much
already said what I've found from my own experiments.  Random
quantization, although somewhat effective, isn't really worth alot of
effort to achieve.  Much more interesting designs involve being able
to select the amount of "push" or "pull" for each step and set
templates for this.  Also, you need a good resolution in order to make
a real groove, 96ppq won't cut it.  You might be surprised at how
closely a good drummer can nail their timing.  Sure, they're not right
on the 16th note grid, but each drum hit is exactly where they wanted
it.  The best effect for randomness is between successive bars, as it
can be a real task programming an entire song without relying on
static loops.
