IMHO, the grooviness of random timing is a myth. It only sounds like
an amateur drummer. What you want is random _velocity_. And
preferably, not even random, but controlled 'randomish'. Another good
idea is to have the ability to set "in-between" hits to random mode
(again, velocity, not timing) so that beats on bars are clean.
