I would recommend any module or effect based on vactrols.  The slow
response/recovery of this is distinct, and they can be coaxed into lo-fi
sounds pretty easily.

If you are trying to make a random sound source with a modular synth, then I
would recommend patching white noise into a good sample and hold.  This
gives a "random" CV, which has a different and often unexpected character
depending on the sample and hold clock rate, pulse width, and output
attenuation/scaling.  If you patch the output to a VCO pitch, you can get
some amazing randomness.  Tuning the VCO way up often sounds like it's
reaching radio frequencies.
