I get most of my (expensive) parts from "found"
objects from dumpsters or flea markets. I've actually
thought about setting up a list of what's worth
salvaging (expensive to buy), from the top of my head
though:
Pots
Switches
Jacks
Knobs
Big electrolytics
Transformers (!!) (actually, whole PSUs are good)
Casing (got 3 complete schroff racks for $10 at the
local junkyard)
Connectors
Keyboards (duh)
Special ICs
Patchcables (got a lot of >100 bananas for $5 at the
same junkyard)
Weird shit you couldn't find elsewhere
What, in my opinion, is not worth collecting:
transistors, cheap caps, resistors, other
cheap/inexpensive & easily accessible parts
Of course, salvaging parts *does* make life hard for
you sometimes (unexpected failures), but it also
forces you to learn...
